I really hope the i3 wins. I really like how BMW went out on a limb and stuck to their guns with the i cars. But its going to be tough with the F-type and the Tesla Model S in the mix...

I get the i3 being on the list, but I don't see what is so special about the X5 and 4-Series.

my vote would go to Model S and if it was more affordable (start in 40K range), I would vote with my both hands.

I suspect the i3 will make the short list of seven, but doubt the other two BMW models will. Fortunately I think the i3 has a pretty good shot at taking it all - previous winners include the Volt/Ampera in 2012 and the Leaf in 2011. So they definitely favor innovative cars with efficient powertrains.

Mazda3 i think... efficient power train, great driving dynamics and low entry price.

Wouldn't the Tesla take it in that sense though?

Possibly, sure. But I think the i3 makes a good case as well given its ground-breaking carbon fiber construction and more widely accessible pricing.

I think the competition of finalists will be between BMW i3, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes S-Class.

Fiat 500 / 2008

Opel/Vauxhaul Insignia / 2009

VW Polo / 2010

Leaf / 2011 / MSRP $33k

Volt/Ampera / 2012 / MSRP $37k

VW Golf / 2013 / MSRP $18k-$36k

Personally, I'd say Tesla is the winner, but they seem to go for cars under $37k MSRP. Considering that and the past "winners", I'd adjust my expectations (and definition) of "winner" accordingly.
