According to something I read, BMW only uses about 50% of the batteries' capacity. In other words, when it reads 10% remaining, it's more like 55% remaining. I'm sure software manages the cells so they're cycled properly.

Was @ my dealer today, they now have 3 AH3 sitting on the lot. One MSport with options but no cameras, one with not many options and a 3rd all optioned out but not Sport. Looks like AH3 gets the larger LCD with or without Nav. The oldest one had the window sticker printed in September. Newest was November 30th. |

Drove to work like a maniac today in sport mode exclusively. Got my all time low of 20.5mpg (I get 28 in Comfort and 30 in Eco Pro)
20.5 is still good for the way I drove, but it is probably almost what a 335i would get. It's really like owning two cars in one. And oh yeah it's an obvious lesson in how driving habits mainly influence the fun you have and your gas bill. Cut my commute down from 25 to 23 minutes. |

Called BMW NA and confirmed that my July-built AH3 has a recall open for "Vehicle Programming". For those who had it done, do you know what it actually does? I should probably just call a service center to find out.

Picked up my AH3 last week!!!
This is by far my favorite car I have ever had... It really is like having two cars in one. I live in the bay area and commute through the rush hour stop and go traffic jams every day. I get so much benefit during these times it is crazy, the engine is off more than it is on for my hour+ commute home. On the flip side, in the early morning I can throw it in sport mode and get to work in 12 minutes
I was able to get the eco credit since I ordered 2 months ago, but when I picked it up the holiday bonus cash was going on so I was able to get that too for a total of $7k off! Mine has sport package with Anthricite wood upgrade and Harmon Kardon package... I have been happy to find that it came with heated steering wheel and little things that the other 3's have to pay for... Also, has anyone noticed the headlights lighting up the side you turn towards? That is crazy.. Plus the lease is an amazing deal I would say... Here are some pics! |

I didn't ask the service advisor what the reprogram was for but I know the car was not changing out of the different modes. It would only stay in comfort mode. I couldn't change to eco pro or sport. Now all seems fine. I have been getting mid 30's mpg in city traffic. Low 20's in real stop and go traffic. I found that if I can keep the car around 50 mph it can get close to 40 mpg. Driving at normal highway speeds mid to high 30's. Of course all this is in eco pro and being very gentle on the accelerator. If anyone has the BMW apps and connects the analyzer you can tell how you anticipate traffic and speed. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a BMW. There is a time to stomp on it and a time to economical though.

Just ordered an AH3, dealer swapped an allocation for a January build date. Got it for $500 over invoice.
Details: Mineral White Metallic with Black Leather and Brushed Aluminum Trim; Sport Line; Premium, Technology, and Driver Assistance Packages (I have been driving an Infiniti with side and top view cameras and after getting used to them it is an option you feel naked without); Heated front seats; HK surround sound. Thanks for all the information and discussion, it helped push me over the edge. |

Another fun use of the ActiveHybrid's Eco Pro mode: Car camping. Was forced to wait longer than desired in my car, and it was nice to have the engine shut off most of the time. With air conditioning and radio running, the engine would idle for a minute to recharge, and that'd last for 15 or 20 minutes of emissions-free climate control. Without Eco Pro, it'd only last for around half the time. The car feels comfortable enough with Eco Pro while stationary.
Makes you feel slightly less guilty about using a car engine to generate electricity for accessories. |

Yes, I'll get both the $3,500 ECO credit and the $1,000 Holiday credit. The dealer expects that the ECO credit will be renewed. I wouldn't have paid the additional premium for an AH3 without the ECO credit.

Did you guys know that the AH3 (as well as AH5 & AH7) uses the heavy-duty ZF 8HP70 transmission, that is rated to handle 700nm (516lb-ft) of torque?
The actual part description is GA8P70H With the H designating Hybrid use, with the electric motor in place of the torque converter. The standard 3-series (along with other BMW N20/N55 vehicles) uses the GA8HP45Z which is rated to 450nm (331lb-ft) Other BMWs which uses the heavy duty version are the 550i/650i750i, the GA8HP70Z. No doubt to accomodate the additional power of the N63/N63tu V8. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission |
