Autosol + elbow grease.

I'm gonna try that, cos I've tried the Solvol Autosol method to no avail

(Hopefully you can buy it at Halfrauds)

I use meguiars nxt all metal polish. It's the best I have used up to now. Leave it to cure then buff to a powder it leaves a nice finish as well..

The Autosol method does work but it takes a long time. I was sat on the ground polishing the exhaust tips for 15/20 minutes to get rid of all the black deposits. To be fair, I hadn't cleaned them before other than washing, so there was 7000 miles worth of deposits!

I'll try the Autoglym wheel cleaner next time instead.

Me too - great stuff, shifts any amount of crud quickly and easily without any hard work at buffing

Micro Fiber cloth with metal pollish and pull side to side round it, if still don't come off 0000 wire wool with paste if stil struggle 00 wire wool then finish with Micro Fiber and finer metal polish never beaten yet, battery drill and metal pollish tool last resort does the trick

Mothers metal or aluminum polish and some steel wool. Rub it on. Will look amazing like chrome. Better than the first day you got the car!

Some of these suggestions, such as using steel wool, sound pretty aggressive.

I know the crud is pretty hard to remove (I've not had much success so far) but is it really ok to attack the finish with something as abrasive as that?

Yes it's fine done it heaps but you need to use plenty of paste and very fine wire wool 0000 first and work up

Try bug and tar spray.

I've read that tooth paste works as well.
