AMS: BMW considering 4-series Four-Door Coupe (F36)
BIMMERPOST NEWS AMS: BMW considering 4-series Four-Door Coupe (F36) While BMW continues development of the new F30 3-series set to debut in Spring 2012, German Auto Motor und Sport now reports about an interesting rumor: BMW is said to expand their lineup with a 4-door coupe based on the F30 platform. Internally called F36, BMW seems to consider 4-series for the name of this model. According to AMS, BMW is currently working on a first design model to showcase the car internally. Compared to the F30, the 4er is said to be 4cm or 1.5" longer, 3cm or 1.2" wider and 6cm or 2.3" lower than the F30 sedan. Needless to say that this should make for a more sporty and menacing look. The report goes on to speculate about a public debut in 2014. BMW insider Scott26 however mentioned that there's no final decision on this car made yet. We can't tell how likely this 4er will make it into production at this point. BMW has started thinking about it only just, so it might be a while until we know more. [Source: Auto Motor und Sport]

NO.
We already have the 6er grand coupe. And 3er GT is coming. What is the point?? Make a 3er grand coupe, IF YOU MUST. But we really don't need a "4-series"

Interesting, so maybe that is reason for rumors of no M3 Sedan, because there will be a M4 sedan!
I don't get why these conpanies don't just change the looks of their regular sedans instead of making a new class, why not just make this the normal 3 series sedan? is there really a need for both? |

Totally agree. Give your sedan nice lines with some headroom and be done with it instead of making two different models.

I'd like to see this hit production, partly because I want to see a F36 chassis, but I have a feeling this would draw sales from the F30 sedan, and BMW wouldn't want that.
I could see a mid-to-large-size 4-door Coupe coming to compete with the CLS or A7, unless BMW is trying to establish a class of a smaller 4-door Coupe.

And what is next, a 1 series sedan? To compete with Audi's A3 sedan that they are rumored to be making... What will Audi do to compete with the 4 series? They already used the A5 for their true coupe, will there be an Audi A4.5? Or Audi A5 Sedan?

This could draw sales from the regular 3 series Sedan BUT will probably be priced about $4K higher (have more standard features) and it will probalby have more options normally only found in the 5 series like nappa leather option, night vision, and they will probably charge 5 series prices for options (like $1000 for comfort access instead of charging $500 like in the 3 series now). So they may take away from their 3 series sedan sales but will make more $$$ in the process. |

Audi already has an A5 sedan. Checkout the Audi A5 Sportback.

VW had a great succes with its Passat CC model and the sales for the normal version were very good, too.
Audi has a car in this class A5 Sportback, but there is A7 sportback too. If the 4 series will have a proper design I think that BMW will make a good move Also 6 series Gran Coupe will have a high price... |

Audi puts its S Line on everything and the S engines are CRAP, which barely keep up with standard BMW engines, and their RS lines are way overpriced. Mercedes puts out an AMG version of almost every single car they make, when that is totally uncalled for and defeates the original purpose of AMG (G Wagon, really?) BMW is just following so they can continue to compete. BMW makes money on everything they do, if they don't they stop doing it (Z4 Coupe), so you may see it as watering down, but they are just trying to stay with their competition, they don't want to lose customers because they don't have that one niche segment so they go for it all. What car company isn't watered down? other than the mega expensive ones? |

The idea of a four-door vehicle being called a "coupe" is, in and of itself, sheer idiocy! Regardless of how sleek it looks, it's still a sedan.
If BMW want to build a new sedan, so be it, but I don't really see what the point would be. Personally, I think the primary reason MB created the CLS-Class is that the E Class was going to be their mid-lux offering and the S-Class was getting so expensive that they needed something priced between those two.
