BMW Intelligent Headlight Technology: High Beam Assistant

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Intelligent Headlight Technology: High Beam Assistant

COMMENTS

First introduced on the new BMW 7 Series (July 2012) as part of the optional Adaptive LED Headlights, this functionality is now also supported with Xenon headlights on all new BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring models specified with a Visibility package.

BMW Adaptive Headlights are combined with BMW High-beam Assistant technology to provide an intelligent headlight system that optimises the illumination of the road ahead without glaring on-coming traffic and other road users. This ensures improved visibility and safety during night time and poor weather driving conditions.

The glare-free High Beam Assistant from BMW ConnectedDrive regulates the main beam of the headlights for optimum illumination of the route and thus reduces the burden on the driver. When the system is activated, an image sensor on the inside of the front mirror monitors the lighting conditions and the traffic ahead at a distance of up to 400 metres. The assistant uses these sensor images to determine the strength of the high beam and varies it smoothly. Oncoming traffic is registered at a distance of some 1,000 metres. A mechanism in the headlight specifically covers points in the high beam and dynamically aligns it so that any risk of dazzling is ruled out.

Great technology, a shame that we can't get this in the US due to our outdated automotive laws.

Great tech! Impressed by it and probably very handy on dark curvy roads.

This is also the first time I hear the new BMW sound 'logo' on a commercial or video... It sounds really really bad :/ Just bring back the wrench hitting something please. It characterised BMW so much.

What's new? Already have that on my 2009 E91, in addition of the adaptive xénon lights.

Should reduce fatigue while driving at night while providing better lighting.

The standard adaptive and high beam assist are impressive.

This looks awesome, cannot wait to get it with some LED lights on my next BM

I always thought being dazzled was a good thing?

Joking at their word choice aside, that is very cool technology.

That is a REAL shame we cannot get those here in the US. Was hoping we could when I first saw them.

You are speaking the truth sir, at least we finally require DRLs...almost a decade after the EU predominately did.

That is fantastic!

Why is this not available in the us? I thought auto-high beams were legal, how is this any different?

Do you mind telling us what the law is preventing us from getting this version of adaptive headlight? I'm very interested

Arrow Adaptive LED high beams w/Dyamic Night Spot Light and Night Vision...

BMW/Audi/MB/Porsche and some American car companies are starting to lobby Congress to allow for these new LED type auto highbeams. The way I understand it is the current law states you need a separate switch for the highbeams - which modern cars with high beam assistant do not have.

Long version of that same video...

I was so impressed(!) with these Adaptive LED high beams. From my understanding they are available on all 7er &6er LCI models.

I was driven around recently in a new 740d LCI and the technology implemented in the 7er was so impressive and seamless. Not just the Adaptive LED head lights(with high beam assistant) but the Night Vision with Dyamic Night Spot Light and the Inovations Packet with Heads Up Display (HUD). They all worked TOGETHER and aided the driver. I am still blown away by that ride in that 7er.

Isn't this the automatic high beams? We already have this on cars here in the US.

Edit: nvm this is awesome! I'm sure this will come to the US.

Your E91 has multi-element LED's that can split the beams and vary high beam from right to left?

I have an Active 3 Hybrid with Anti-dazzle on the build and have yet to see this work once with Automatic High Bean assist on. It behaves like my X5 with Auto High Beam. On or Off. I have not see it split the beam once like the video shows. I do all sorts of driving, city, road trip, desert highways at night and would think that I would have seen this at some point work. Can anyone verify that they have this feature on their F30 with Anti-dazzle and have seen this work?

My E90 doesn't split the beams and it was made the very last production month before F30. Just has adaptive xenons that change depending on speed and cornering and whether fogs are active. The assistant just switches hi to lo when traffic is detected or a built up area.

I don't think any other car has split adaptive led high beams that allow one side to stay on high... This is a very new feature to recent BMWs so I think some of the other posters may be confusing it with the old system I have.

No for sure my E91 has not the last technology of the last bmw´s, but it has nothing less than the new F30 which has xenon and not led headlights.

No, it is Dynamic Adaptive LED headlights. The shape and pattern of the headlights change as you drive past other traffic at night. The adaptive headlights are constantly changing the light on the side and front of the road. Basically you get 80% of your high beam light, without blinding others in front(and to the sides) of you as you drive. Its very awesome once you experience it LIVE.
