Ipod Connectivity - No Sound

Hey Guys, I connected the iPod- USB cable to my iPod, it picked up all the tracks and info, even plays them but there's no sound, raised the volume on dash but still no sound.

However when I connect the aux directly to the iPod in that case there's no issue.

Any advice?

Did you use the original white Ipod USB cable ?

Can you get another Ipod and cable to test ?

Do you have BMW Assist? If not, you'll need a y-cable.

I haven't got assist/online
The Y cable connects to both the USB and the AUX in the car and the other end to the Ipod. You can buy them on Amazon UK for about £10

It comes free with certain configurations. I believe if you don't have the cradle in the armrest then you get the Y cable.

Y Cable Vs Ipod usb

I just got the 2013 328i with enhanced blue tooth and BMW assist. The Y cable does nothing when I plug in the usb port to my ipod. I see the tracks and it plays but there is no sound.

The White cable that came with my ipod doesn't even register when I plug that in .....Why would this happen with both plugs?

One point I noticed is that if you have your music on your iPhone/ipad streamed through iCloud but not actually downloaded on the device, it's not going to play through the USB cable. It would play through Bluetooth though.

The only way to have the music play through the USB cable is to have it downloaded on your apple device through iTunes or by hitting the iCloud sign next to the song on your apple device. I did it through the regular charging cable.

Hey, great thread - thanks for the info. I am collecting my F30 next week and just wondering:

I have a lot of music so planning to connect my 160gb iPod classic via USB in the armrest to listen to Mp3's (Car has all the relevant tech options to show art etc).

For calls/emails/texts I want to simply have my iPhone 5 connected via Bluetooth at the same time.

I am really hoping the car can accommodate both devices at the same time and that a call coming in would simply switch to the iPhone, but I have read somewhere that only one device can be connected at one time.

I would be very grateful if someone could confirm as my plan must be a common idea among people who have more music than a 64gb iPhone can hold.

That should work fine as I have a similar setup in my car although using a BlackBerry instead of an iPhone.

I have a 120gb ipod classic plugged in the armrest with the y-cable, and use my BlackBerry connected via bluetooth for phone calls and emails.

www.bmw.com/bluetooth

make sure you update the usb/bluetooth firmware first (no harm doing it anyway)

when i first got my car (asia), plug in ipod classic using apple white usb cable, it wouldn't play, after updating the firmware it started playing ok...

the car will support both ipod & iphone concurrently

ipod will be connected via the USB cable, will presumably your iphone will be via bluetooth. In the media menu, you will select whether to play ipod (USB) or iphone (bluetooth), obviously you can't play both.

If you're playing with ipod and your phone rings, it will auto switch to phone mode, and resume playing when you disconnect phone.

I have 2 phone paired to the car (concurrently) and ipod via usb connected all the time, no issue whatsoever (except the occasional ipod classic hang)
