Those were simply rumors. There will be an M3 sedan, and it will retain the M3 badge.

What's funny is it says right there in the article:

"Body style 2-door sedan / 2-door convertible"

And yes, yesterday's 2 door sedans are different from 2 door coupes, just like today's 4 door coupes are different from today's 4 door sedans.

Back in the day most german coupes started out as a sedan then turned into a coupe', like the old merc, 280E then 280SEC (Sport Einspritzung Coupe') same chassis cut shorter to make it a 2 door sedan which is a coupay.(coupe' meaning cut in French)
Now coupe means slick lines,low roof line etc.

The E21 3 series was designed from scratch to be a sporty 2 door car,not a sedan turned coupe' and there was NO 3 Series sedan offered then.

The E46 M3 CSL isn't more of a coupe than the E30 M3. The C in CSL means Coupe,both cars don't have the lines of a nissan Z car that some people think is what a coupe means.

Based on my observation, about 70% of all E90 coupes and convertibles I see on the road the 335s, while the same is true of only 10-15% of the sedans. So it would make sense to position the Coupe above the Sedan (kind of like what Audi did with the A5).
