New 340XI Ordered :)
Hey All,
I own a 335xi 2008, it has been an awesome car but has 135,000 miles on it and just gave me a Adaptive headlight error which to be frank was going to cost me $$$$. After a weekend visit to BMW with the Mrs, I now have a 340XI on order and am very excited. Its a custom build so I have to wait a few weeks for the car to be delivered. My question to the group is this 1) Should I buy the Tire and Wheel Protection. I hate run flats so fully expect to swap the run flats with non run flats as soon as the factory tires are down to the min lease return level (i'll fit them back on the car when I return it). That said, I would like your opinion on this coverage 2) BMW Lease Protection. My biggest fear is a massive bill at the end of the lease. Opinions please and I can't wait for this 340 |

I opted NOT to get the Tire and Wheel Protection and I regret it immensely. I just hit a pothole and I ended up having to spend upwards of $1500 for a new wheel and tire. So, I would say go for the wheel/tire insurance! As for the BMW lease protection, I don't think I opted for that either, and don't think I would in the future. Just a note though, this is the F8x M3/4 forum, Not the 3 series forum. There is a forum specifically for your car; so you will probably get more objective responses. For example, while the tire/wheel insurance is offered for both cars, while I would recommend it for M3 owners, as I did above, it may not be worth it for the 340 considering the difference in price for wheels and tires that come on that car vs. the more expensive M wheels and the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Here is the F30 3 series forum for your information: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/index.php EDIT: I see that the thread was moved to the correct forum!

I bought a better 3rd party wheel protection. Do not buy lease protection. If you take care of your car it is a huge rip off.

I chose no on number one. Hopefully I don't regret it.
I Got a good rim repair place and my tires never last over 10,000 miles. |

I would remove the run flats immediately (I did that). Are you going to run an 18 or 19" rim? To be honest, I'm scanning the road for potholes all the time, and I don't understand how people hit these craters. I also can't stand insurance, I think it's a ripoff, but that's your call.
No offense to anyone on here who has spent money replacing tires, but I don't understand how people end up getting stuck with $700 tire bills, when these things cost $300 on tire rack. I was sitting in a BMW focus group and a guy had two blowouts on his 535, and he was so pissed he didn't buy the package. 18's are more forgiving than 19's. The steel in your run flat tire will make the rubber puncture easier and go flat. Happened to my co-worker 2 weeks ago. He could drive on it, but needed replacement. My non run flat is actually slightly more forgiving and not as stiff. Not to mention, they are lighter and not as loud. On the overall insurance (question 2), I wouldn't go for that, so long that you maintain your car and it doesn't get bumped while parking etc.... |

In terms of the wheel and tire insurance, I purchased it from my BMW dealer at the time I took delivery of my car for $1,200 (I negotiated it down from $1,500).
At the time, I didn't know any better. The F&I representative at the dealership that was pitching the insurance said it could cost $1,000 to replace a rim and the "expensive and damage prone" run flat tires. So, I went along with his recommendation - my bad. It turns out that I found my exact Pirelli run flat tires on Tire Rack for $177 each and new OEM replacement rims (not refurbished) for $190 each. So, even with mounting, I'm looking at only about $400 total to replace one rim and tire. That's a lot less than the $1,000 I was told it would cost. Bottom line - Do the research before you purchase the insurance. Also, take into consideration the roads you drive on regularly. If you drive in an area with bad roads, you may want to consider the insurance.

I checked with my insurance agent before buying. He checked with both Underwriting and Claims, they both said road damage would be COVERED under my Comprehensive. He also sent me that affirmation AND noted it in my file.

Good point...And another reason to consider passing on the tire and wheel insurance.

I like your plan to swap the tires back on at the minimum return level. Do you know what that level is? I'm trying to realistically think about how long the factory run-flats will last.
