I don't know how it works in the US, but over here in the UK the premium higher octane fuels typically have a better additive package, (for example our Esso Synergy Fuels contain a proprietary additive with a marker), also premium claim to contains more additives than regular fuels.

Our premium typically costs are around 10 pence a litre more than regular fuel, which is equivalent to around 65 cents a UK gallon. So appears we are in a similar place.

Someone mentioned the US users whining and someone from Europe chipping in... Just for the record, our prices have dropped significantly with the oil price drop, but we are still seeing averages around £4.63 ($6.66) for regular, £5.08 ($7.30) for premium (UK gallons @ 4.546 litres).

What do you think Big Oil has done for decades? Diesel used to be cheaper than regular, but now it's either on a par with or more than premium, although it has come down quite a bit in the last year. I don't go hunting for cheap gas, because if I was that paranoid about gas prices, I'd be driving something completely different. An 80-cent difference between unleaded regular and premium is pretty extreme, though. Be happy that it's not $4.50 a gallon or more like it was a couple of years ago.

Around here in Central Louisiana it averages $0.40 between regular and premium. When I first got stationed here, I used to ask myself the same question why the huge difference. But no complaints here when you're paying $2.09 for 93 octane.

The Costco by my house in Chicago is selling premium $2.05 a gallon. My go-to Thorntons is at $2.23 a gallon. A Shell a few miles SW is selling at $2.05 a gallon.

My advice, take a nice drive down to the Western suburbs.

Is anyone else experiencing premium prices that are now 80¢ - $1 per gallon higher than regular?!?! That's what's happening in Chicago. It's INSANE!!!

Fortunately for me I can mostly drive only when I want to. I take the L at least 75% of the time. I have been planning to start filling up with half mid-grade and half premium. I've even thought about 1/2 regular 87 and 1/2 premium 93, for 90 octane.
Yep, since gas prices (regular) started to plummet, the 'spread' between premium and regular has almost doubled. I believe it's simply the oil companies attempt to keep overall revenues from dropping so much. The market for 91-93 AKI fuel is much smaller, and with overall prices down, they're assuming people who drive cars requiring it will pay.

Dont even get me started on gas prices in Socal. We have so many added taxes it ridiculous. I believe we have the highest prices in the US, only Europeans get more screwed, though they pay by the liter so they must be getting a better deal.

You should move to New Jersey!

But yeah, even despite the low prices here the spread is random enough that I pass by all 3 gas stations on my way to work and pick the cheapest one on the way back. For everyone knocking on the OP, it's the principle of the matter more than the $3-4 saved!

Is it sad that I don't even look at the price difference between regular and premium??

Either way who cares, back in 2007 it cost me $70 to fill up, now it costs me half that.

Oh I remember the good ol' days when premium was right around $1. I could afford to fill up my tricked out Acura Integra and grab a Big Mac meal for less than $20. I yearn for those days. Now I pay $40 to fill up and buy a soy latte, double shot, no foam, extra hot, upside down, etc with my same $5.

92 octane in philadelphia is about 2.20 so I'm not complaining...on top of that our local giant store gives anywhere from 10 to 20 cents off per gallon.

Regular is about $1.30 regularly now where I'm at. Premium is anywhere from $1.60-2.00. For the fact I can fill up my tank for around $20 though, I'm not complaining.

ROFL! I could never understand how you guys complain so much!

You're just catching up with the rest of the world.

I pay about US$4.37 per US gallon for premium diesel fuel and my premium petrol counterparts pay about US$4.85 also for one US gallon.

You've got it cheap!

I said I went to Gas Buddy to see for myself because it is unbelievable that the spread would be so much, not that I did not believe you. As you said, you are there and see it for yourself.

If I told you the sky is green, you are probably going to look up and see for yourself.

The main reason I checked Gas Buddy is to see the actual price per gallon so I could understand your affordability question which you subsequently took off the table.

I agree that the huge spread is not justified from a cost standpoint. But cost is not the only factor. What the traffic will bear is also a factor and the oil companies are apparently exploiting that factor in your area. That sucks.

BTW, Costco is selling premium in Chicago today for $2.24 and its Top Tier and regular for $1.60. While the spread sucks, the actual price of premium is really low historically.

Man, all you guys bitching about gas prices( yeah I know the original topic is more about the disparity between grades), I filled up yesterday at $2.69 for 91..it was not that long ago that we were near $5 a gallon gas. This windfall has greatly improved the quality of liquor I partake in.

The real question isn't about affordability.

The question is about what is clearly price gouging on one particular grade of fuel.

There is absolutely no cost of production basis for premium gas to be priced 80¢ - $1 higher than regular gas.
100% agree. It's not about being able to afford it or not. Of course I can afford it.

In my location, some gas stations are now showing a $0.80 difference between regular and premium. This used to be 20 cents.

They figured owners of "premium" cars don't look at price. And seeing some of the comments on here, I guess they are right. With the low price of gas, they are trying to take advantage and gouge the customers/suckers since it's still relatively "cheap", as compared to a couple years ago. Of course that difference might remain even after the gas goes back up.

I got so annoyed at this, that I'm now getting slightly out of my way (30 minutes more per week) to get my gas at Costco. Delta is 20 cents and the gas is top tier. This is called voting with your wallet, but I see a lot of commenters here would rather pay more for less? Are these the same people who pay MSRP for their cars?

The Exxon I pass by here in Langhorne is $2.09 for regular, $2.89 for premium, WTF IS THAT! Not much better elsewhere in this area. Surprised the city is cheaper.
