Resurrecting this thread as I'm interested in hearing more ideas from people.

Right now I have:

1. Call wife
2. Nav home
3. Nav work
4. Cancel nav
5. Split screen: Entertainment
6. Split screen: Traffic info
7. <none yet>
8. Split screen toggle

Note: I have the nav options not because I don't know my way home or work, but because of insane seattle commuting traffic and I want realtime traffic factored into my route.

Many of the past replies have shortcuts key which seem not as useful if you have a HUD. For example, seems unnecessary to have a shortcut key assigned for "Split screen: Arrow display" since the arrows are already in your HUD.

"Alternative routes": I figured that given the route is the best it can possibly be based on realtime traffic, I wouldn't seek or alternate routes that often. When do you use this?

Also, What is your scenario where "Traffic list" is used that often? Just to inform you how bad it is so you know?

Alternative Routes can provide 3 different routes with each its own ETA, distance, and traffic delay information. It is THE tool to use when deciding upon different possible routes to your destination.

Traffic List is used to detail any delays on your route. After noticing a traffic delay, Traffic List will tell you the type (construction, accident, etc), and location of the delay(s).

An example of using Traffic List? You're driving to your route and a delay appears. Hit Traffic List to learn what is causing the delay.

I understand the hands off approach to using the Navigation. But personally, my car is a work tool where efficiency results in greater income. I use every resource possible to minimize delays. Experience, radio, WAZE, and BMW Navigation together is smarter than BMW Navigation alone!

After 28k miles I feel like I have my 1-8 presets pretty ironed out, but it's interesting to see other user perspectives.

Canceling the navigation route is a former preset I no longer use. This preset was freed up by using voice command to cancel route.

I used to have Split Screen on a preset until I decided that 2 right shifts of the iDrive interface was an easy enough way to access Split Screen. It's really that easy. I briefly used voice command here too, but since I'm usually toggling Split Screen when I'm listening to something... I found the audio system being muted (to hear my command) intrusive.

I don't use any presets for calling contacts. I find that if a number is so frequently dialed that I would consider storing it in a preset; then it is most likely in my recently dialed numbers. I click the phone button on the wheel and scroll through to the contact I want to call. If the contact is outside of this recent caller list, I ask Siri to dial for me.

Great info! After reading your reasoning I agree with all of it. I had 1 to dial my wife but it's so easy to hold down the voice button on steering wheel to trigger Siri and say "call wife".

Using Siri is also way better than the car's built in voice recognition for dialing contacts because Siri handles ethnic names better. Downside is that it seems slower to process.

Well, while GlennQNYC and others offer very compelling logic for their use, I have set the memory buttons up for the items I use most often and to minimize the number of iDrvie controller clicks/bumps I have to do for them:
  1. Call Home
  2. Navigate Home
  3. Equalizer settings
  4. Stop Navigation Guidance
  5. Sport Mode Settings (have coded that in)
  6. Trip Info
  7. Tire Pressure (have coded tire pressure & Temp in)
  8. EcoPro Performance (useful on long trips)
Found this thread to be extremely informative, but ultimately setting these buttons up is really a personal choice.

BTW, I have Radio Presets set as well, between Satellite & FM stations I listen to -- and I use Voice Command to activate these

For what it's worth (with due apologies to Buffalo Springfield!)

Great ideas here and I won't repeat my entire list, but a great preset if you share the car with another person is to set your partner's profile as preset 8 on your profile, and have your profile be set to preset 8 on his/her profile.

So if my wife and I switch seats for any reason, she just presses preset 8 and it calls up all her profile settings (seat, mirrors, radio presets, climate, etc). When we switch back, I just press preset 8 and it calls up all of my settings.

I also don't bother assigning presets to individual radio stations. Instead, I create a list of favorite stations (AM, FM and SAT may be included in list) and assign preset 1 to my radio presets. With a single button I can call up all my fav radio/SAT stations and navigate quickly with iDrive controller.

Your 'top 8' has me thinking I should change my "Tone Settings" preset to "Equalizer." I rarely adjust any tone setting except the EQ bands.

This is why I enjoy this thread.

Many of the items people are mentioning here are actually easier to access using the voice input. (ie just say the radio band and frequency (FM 102.2)

Try to use the 8 keys for things that are harder to do (ie that require several menu steps with the iDrive) - or if you have the internet then going to a specific web page.

Ie - split screen On/Off (or select a specific display) is easy by voice input - but I use a key to turn the HUD off/on.

Cheers

Bring up the address up on the screen and scroll to it, but don't click it to start navigation.

Them, press and hold the button you want to program it to.

Press Option, and scroll to the Split Screen line, but don't click it.

Now press and hold the 1-8 button you want to program to Split Screen.

The button when pressed normally will now toggle split screen. I have that programmed to button #2 on my car; very useful.
