Reversing camera as dash cam?
Does anyone know if there's a way to record from the reversing camera?
I know it can be coded to always on and if there was some way to capture the image we'd have built in rear dash cams.... |

Search on here. There was a guy who retrofit surround view. His thread had the wiring diagram for all the cameras. You would need that for the video feed of course to send to a hard drive. I think the rear camera might have a high current draw. You would need a timer as well so it doesn't run down the battery or activate anything else in the car that runs the battery down. May be even a separate battery pack to play it safe so you can run it all for longer. By the time you have sourced some kind of hardware for recording it would start to add up. You could probably record to something like a Raspberry Pii (small computer) with video signal input. If you have the time and money yes it can be done. Hide it all under the boot floor for a clean install.
Conclusion: cheaper and easier to install and run a dash cam with rear view camera. Something like the Thinkware F800pro would enable you to connect to it using your iPhone and download video footage directly as well as upload to cloud. Other option is to do away with the rear view camera and install a dash cam lens there instead. Something like this but with the rear: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1082116 |
