First set of tyres shagged; winter options?
Well, 36,500mls later from leaving the showroom in June 2012, the first set of Bridgestone Potenza's have bitten the dust. The front right's outer sidewall especially! Pictures below show that in comparison to the other tyres, though all are on minimal tread depth now and require changing.
So, on that topic and being that time now where we see <7C, I have some options! So, do I just go and get another set of shoes (Potenza's again) or should I look into winter tyres? Last year I didn't bother with winter's and just ran the Potenza's throughout on my 18" 225/255 setup. It did alright. I just didn't bother driving it if conditions meant it wouldn't move. Now, I'm pretty certain your responses will suggest I grab a set of winter rubber and I completely agree it's a good option (money aside) as they look to work extremely well and increase safety. Therefore, which is best and the most cost effective from your experience? I don't really want to get a set of new alloys, but is it suitable to have big fat 255's on the back? What sort of costs am I looking at do you reckon? Cheers!

Can't remember what my E90 330d did, but it got that many punctures I don't think it ever got a complete new set on at once.

I thought the best setup for winter tyres was 225/45/18 on all four corners?? When I bought my winters are few months ago the research on forums etc recommend this

To the OP....
My advice is to buy some Non runflat winter tyres (cheaper than runflats) and then buy my old 18" Contisport 5 SSR's that I toot off my wheels to make room for my winters http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=891224 |

I haven't, though it had its first service at 26,000mls. I believe the wear is largely caused by roundabouts as when turning right, the front right arcs in, placing more load on the sidewall which is then taking the scrubbing and the wear. The inside of the front left (most loaded contact patch on a roundabout) is also the most visibly worn part of the tyre, though not to the same extent as the front right's outside sidewall.

Maybe more effective economies of scale now as more cars are using RFT's?

Yeah, common thing for the RFT's to to ride and wear heavily on their sidewalls.

Though naturally, if you want to protect from curb rash, stay away from the curbs That said, easier said than done when it's snowing (though I've not hit one yet!) so I'd expect the Blizzak's come with that... EDIT: Just as an aside, I had Pirelli PZero's fitted to my E90 LCI 330d and they looked crap in comparison to the Potenza's as they had no protector lip and looked skinny like it barely fitted the alloys!

True, but it'll help on those damn near stationary snakey moments! But I largely prefer the look of them.
