So did you average 48mpg over the journey or 42mpg?

So I'm not allowed a quick copy and paste post regarding 335d ratios in response to a 335i ratio post in a 335d mpg thread? Seems all relevant to me.

Sheesh indeed!

48mpg for the journey is how I read it.

Ave speed seems low if the vast majority of the driving was done at 75mph?

Interesting results though. I may have a go at something similar for comparisons.
Would be good if a 330d sdrive and 335i driver could do the same?

Would be good to see the difference of a 75mph journey in the 330d x-drive.

Go for it mate.

My total guesses for cruising at a steady 75mph on a reasonably flat run:

335i (manual) 40 - 42 mpg
335i (auto) 43 - 45 mpg
335d 48 - 50 mpg
330xd 52 - 54 mpg
330sd 57 - 59 mpg.

There are too many variables for us to prove conclusively what the exact figure is for each car but it will be interesting to read people's findings.

This was a steady 64 mile drive . 5 miles urban, rest on motorway - 18 miles at 50, 41 miles at 75. This was during 'running in'

Cool. I suspect the 18 miles at 50 mph would have helped. Was the 50 mph in 8th gear? If so engine was barely ticking over at 1111 rpm. Impressive.

The 50 was through roadworks on cruise ( well set at 53 mph) but didn't think to look at rev counter. This was in its first 100 miles and was playing with all the gadgets!

Oh yes - I must remember to play with my gadgets whilst stationary in March or I'll be using the GAP insurance!

I'll get the figures next time I go for a steady cruise...

...But I would be surprised if I managed 43-45. I'm expecting more around the 40 mark if I'm honest.

From the first play I had on Boxing Day I managed 41.1mpg from a 1:24hr drive around. This was a good mix of motorway, single carriageway roads and a bit of town driving. I may have also got just a smidge above 70 at times on the motorway. To be honest this is better than I would have expected

We've been away since then so not had any more playtime but I'm interested to see what I get on the normal day-to-day commute.

With the petrol and diesel 6 cylinders being so high geared, especially the autos (as I posted earlier), I'd have thought 44 mpg would be possible. Anything much above 75 mph and I imagine the economy would fall off fairly rapidly.

I wonder if using CC is the correct way to measure this. On one hand it's the only way to accurately stick to exactly 75 mph, on the other, we know it can be a bit thirstier than not using it. Thoughts from potential testers?

If it is a genuine steady cruise then it's at least one way to keep things consistent across all the samples... however if you are constantly having to slow and speed up then it will affect things anyway. It's never going to perfect!

And besides, if we all use cruise control in these situations then surely it makes sense to reflect real-world usage anyway.

Good points I agree with. Also, using CC to consistently maintain an accurate 75 mph, is safer than staring at the speedometer (cue HUD users!).

The wind we are having at the moment can have a great effect too. I'm currently running around in a Alfa Giulietta 1.6 Diesel at the moment and on the 30th going down to London (220 miles) it averaged 38mpg due to the head wind! It average 55mpg on the way back.
