I know when the tech that did mine he took some video of the noise with the car running and then had to open everything up and send pictures the BMW NA. They had him look for certain damaged items then based repairs off of that. I've heard other people who had it worse than mine and they replaced the vanos and a bunch more parts than mine required. I guess I was lucky as there was a new tech at the dealership I took my car to who had just moved to NC from the Midwest. He said they had cars in weekly for the timing chain replacement. He just happened to hear my car in the next stall and zeroed in that it was from timing chain.

Update:
BMW put car together. Noise issue is still there. Now they are saying they never replaced the timing chain or oil pump but tried to clean it at first! NOT A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER! So he said they ordered a new oil pump now and have to wait another 2 weeks. I am still thinking this is a timing chain stretch as I have heard my fair share of stretched chains on cars. But ok BMW, give me a brand new pump and than give me a brand new chain when you have to disassemble my car for the 3rd time! On the positive note, I have had my oil flushed 3 times already so great way to get all the oil out of my engine and circulated throughout all the passages to free up any of the older oil that was in there, haha 3K on the loaner already and almost 2 months out this upcoming Wed. |

Yup, that clicking noise is a lot louder on mine especially when I rev it. The other more whining noise is not soo much but still present on mine. So maybe I have 2 issues, pump going bad and belt guides and or chain as well.

That's exactly how mine sounded before they replaced my timing chain I posted earlier ITT. These engines aren't very quiet to begin with, direct injection has that loud diesel like sound.

BMW backing out of warranty and saying I need to pick up my broken car! Not very happy after 2 months of them having it and changing parts out. Calling BMW NA to file a complaint and talking with Service Manager.

Well looks like being nice to service manager and being on the short end of the stick of owning the car for only 3 days was crap. He extended out a favor and called up BMW himself and told them the story and pushed for the Engine. I am a very happy customer now and VERY Happy with BMW OF Seattle!!!! I cannot wait to enjoy my BMW and it will be with a new engine that will be maintained, so this issue doesn't happen again!!!!

Man this isnt very comforting. I just bought a 2013 328i with 32,xxx on the clock for my wife. Warranty is good through November of this year. Looks like I will definitely be looking into an extended warranty. Wish I would of looked further into all this prior to the purchase.

I feel you on this Scumbag_72. I got my car but it was rattling and wierd noises coming from the turbo area so its back in for service once again. Wish I never bought the car with so many issues. Cars are not suppose to have issues from factory, they suppose to have issues when you start to mod them. I am really disappointed in BMW brand and the new F series they have released with the N20 motors. The Newer B series motors seem to be fully closed deck design with strong internals as the N55 and sounds and feel like they have more power through the entire RPM range and feel more solid built like a BMW should be. If I were to purchase again I would buy the Older E92/E93 chassis or the Newer Late 2015 to current BMW and avoid the ones with the N20 all together. I also bought the extended GOLD warranty for issues that might arise as I have a feeling this car will be mostly in the shop and if I have to go in again for the 3rd time I will probably sell the car and get something else and avoid BMW all together.

If you buy a used car without a PPI you're asking for trouble. Also buying a car without a documented service record is just ignorant. No matter what is said the first thing I do when buying a used car is a complete tune up; new plugs, filters, oil, etc.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.... but if I wanted to avoid this issue on my 2013 328i, what parts should I be replacing ? I know the new timing belt is part number 1318648732, is there any other items that need to be replaced, like the timing belt tensioner, etc. (if so, do you guys know the part number) ?

Proper maintenance, turn off ASS, and call it a day. When you start digging into the engine internals for no reason, you're asking for more trouble than you are *possibly* preventing. -tgm |

Thanks for the reply tgmsocal!
Yeah I agree, I don't think there are that many failures in the grand scheme of things, and I realize enthusiasts forum isn't a good representative of the overall owner base. I already have ASS to remember last setting (which is always off for me), and I do oil changes every ~10k kms (~6k miles). I guess I will not worry about it and hope for the best |

*** Update
So I just received a letter from BMW... It's acknowledging this issue you to an extent by extending the warranty on the timing chain and oil pump chain to 7years/70,000 miles.
I'm at 105,000 on my 2014 328i no issues yet...(knock on wood) I'm hopping this class action forces BMW to recall this defective part comes through....https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...g-chains.shtml I feel like I'm driving around with the pin pulled out of the grenade. Anyone else made it this far with n20 on the factory timing chain? |
