BMW windshields
Awhile back someone posted a link to a letter from BMW which stated that if your car has any forward facing cameras/HUD/etc, that you should use the factory windshield because of potential safety issues. I tried searching the forum for that post but my search-fu has failed. Do any of you happen to know where to find that letter?

I don't recall the letter, but I had mine replaced, due to a stone impact, by Safelite with OEM supplier Pilkington windshield (even has the BMW logo embedded). Both rain sensor and HUD work as advertised.

I got serious rock chip and crack in an earlier 2015 3 series i owned. Obviously had to replace the windshield. My insurance company balked like hell at my wanting to replace it with a new BMW windshield. They wanted to send out a repair person to do a fill and spread repair. They lost I won. My out of pocket expense less than $100.00. Stay with factory parts and pay the extra if you have to but in any case be prepared to fight with your insurance.

I had mine replaced and they used a fuyao but it caused some visual issues with lights. They replaced again with same brand and it was the same. They finally replaced with pilkington and that resolved all my issues. Interestingly Fuyao makes the side window glasses on my car and have bmw logos but pilkington makes the windshield.

Had mine replaced by Safelite, who used the cheapest fuyao windshield money could buy. Within 4 weeks, I had more chips in my windshield than I received in over 3 years with the OEM glass. I took car back and demanded OEM glass. They were ultimately receptive to my complaints about decreased legibility (slight) of HUD on the after-market glass, but willing entirely to discount the crappy quality of the glass and presence of dozens of rock chips within only several weeks of use. I got my insurance company involved (USAA) who was great in advocating that my car be restored with OE materials, especially given it was a leased car. Ultimately had the OE Pilkington/BMW branded windshield installed and would caution anyone against accepting cheap glass or assuming Safelite will use OE materials.
