Are their any part numbers at all on it? Can you open it up? I'm guessing the cable portion of it is an antenna of some type. with some part numbers we could puzzle out what it is fairly easily.

All that grey stuff looks like an adhesive of some sort.
Did someone plant a tracking device on your car? |

Honestly my first thought was tracking device, BMW or a shop would hopefully never adhesive that sloppily. That plus I've never seen anything like it plus the damn antenna = tracking device.

looks like a GPS tracking device to me.
Maybe the previous owner had it installed as a theft recovery device, or didn't trust his spouse/children. toss that thing. |

Probably something that somehow bounced off the road and lodged where you found it. The picture isn't good enough to tell but it appears the 'antenna' is just a piece of wire with a shrink wrap or solder-less connector on the free end where it broke off from whatever it was attached to.

Thats gotta be a tracking device. Weird. Could be for anti theft and the last owner forgot to take it off?

Definitely a tracking device. Here's a random thought from my experience...
I know for a fact used car dealers use GPS tracking, unbeknownst to the customers buying the cars. The reason being that the car is easily tracked down and repossessed when they stop paying their loan. Im talking about the "Buy here, Pay here" guys that specifically cater to clients with little to no credit. Sometimes, these cars are "sold" then repossessed only to be "sold" again, multiple times. Absolutely not saying this is what happened to your car but this is a real life example. Its possible whoever sold the vehicle last (possibly before you) had a GPS installed on their car by whoever was holding the paper. Happens all the time. Most times, they will bury it in the dash and there's no easy way to find it. Ive even seen instances where they put one in open sight under the steering column and advise customer of its purpose... only to have a second one hidden in the dash so that when customer thinks he can just clip the wires and stop paying his bill every month - WE STILL FIND THE CAR AND STEAL IT BACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. |

Pull the adhesive tape off and see if there are any part numbers on it. Get some better pics of it, and probably a good time to look into a will or better life insurance.....

Thanks for posting and I hope you find out what the hell it is! Now I'm finding myself wanting to lift the car tonight, pull all four wheels and hope to God there's nothing there, LMAO! That's crazy and it definitely looks like a suspicious device. Yeah and smart move to keep that thing away from your home but also a good idea to keep it away from places you routinely visit such as the office/work!
