What am I missing? I can't see how this delays things as the dealer still does the registering, just not the printing.

I can't understand why this is a big deal for some dealers yet a non-issue for others.
Mark that is because the documentation that arrives with the car once it arrives in the UK has to be sent ito the DVLA in order to get the V5 registration documentation. Only when registered can it be taxed.

My dealer has told me that i will get the car as soon as it is registered. It will not be displaying a tax disc in the screen and will have the 14 day grace period from date of registration during which time the tax disc should arrive. The DVLA are saying that if after 8 days you have not received the tax you can apply for a duplicate at certian post offices.

Seems to be that the government has taken a system that worked and is turning it to s**t!!!

So just to be clear....

This is as a result of the government centralising the function in order to close down regional DVLA office in order to save money because 'we' are broke, because the banks pi**ed our money up the wall, because 'we' borrowed too much....

So 'we' can only blame ourselves.

This country truly is great.

Why don't 'we' just pay even more income tax so there's no possibility of affording a car? That would solve everything.

Just saying.... rant over.

MARK with you all the way mate.
This country has gone to the "Dogs".
PS) the post office has made 400+ million profit and this lot want to privatise it , soon if that goes ahead anyone out in the sticks will wait a week for a delivery.

Dunno, I kinda like the idea of less folk working for the government. With all due respect to anyone here whom I'm sure is doing a great job, my experience of civil servants is on the whole quite poor.

Have asked the dealer to just put a 63 plate on the car. Will put plate on once I get the V5 through. Thanks for the heads up.

The Civil Service is broken - agreed.
Civil Servants [in the main] work hard but do not have the leadership.

I work in the private sector, working with the NHS, they need help for sure.

This thread became rather political!!

Well I am completely confused now. I have just heard back from the dealers. They say categorically that there will be no problem with having the car on the 1st September with the private plate on it. Apparently if the plate is on retention (I gave them the certificate 3 weeks ago), no problems with it going straight on.

Don't get it at all but as long as I'm picking up my car on 1st Sept, that's fine with me.

Mate the problems are getting the DISK, my retention has just been asked for by the dealership to enable them to tax a new car, they need to send this off for a tax disk which may or may not arrive in time.
You will get your plate on your new car and drive it away even if the Tax disk is NOT on it.
It should arrive soon after, according to DVLA.

I think if I had a new M5 just round the corner, so would I be!! It'll be one hell of a car - really looking forward to seeing the photos. Getting more excited about mine now - certainly convinced I made the right choice, even if I am going to desperately miss the 7 and its special features. Air conditioned cup holders - once you've had them.... At least I have made sure I have lots of new toys to play with!

My dealer did my retention document details for me .
Sent 11th July, I got it back 16 days later.
You should get yours soon IMO.

Its not getting the retention back that is the issue as I had mine in June - it is more to do with sending the documents to DVLA and getting the vehicle registerted. This is where the delay occurs as my documents inc the retention cert were sent on the 19th July. I had a call from the dealer today to say that they are now processing them to issue a V5. Once you have a V5 you get the tax posted out - simples!!!

Hopefully i will get my car by next Wednesday the latest - I've got my fingers crossed for sooner as I am raring to get behind the wheel

But heyho it all gets sorted in the end.

You not tempted to wait until 1st September for a 63 plate?

I've had it as a 2 year business lease so with private plate I'm not really too fussed. Granted if I was buying it I would wait the 2 extra weeks to get it on a 63.
