I'm not sure how you made that conclusion. 4 cylinder diesel can mean anything below 330d.

We don't even know what (or if) the 328d is yet, so that's premature at best.

Assuming the 328d comes to pass and ends up employing a version of the N47 TT as found in current *25d models, it will almost certainly offer better performance than the 320d with its single turbo N47. The trade-off would most likely be slightly worse fuel efficiency as is the case with the *25d models vs. their *20d counterparts.

So depending on one's priorities, it could be a better or a worse car overall.

From my point of view I'd take the faster car given that efficiency won't suffer much, and you are already getting a big win in that area vs. a gasoline model. If efficiency were my ultimate goal, I'd be wishing instead for a 318d or 316d.

It's better because it's the "best" balance of performance and MPG. Not as fuel thirsty as a 328 or 330d, not as slow as a 316/318.

It's the goldilocks Diesel!

The 320d may be the best car for you and that's great, I hope you can get one at some point. But what is best for one person may not be best for another. So, I hope BMW intends to deliver a diesel 3 series with > 200hp for the North American market because I think that is what most folks will be shopping for.

Sorry, didn't mean to mislead. It's actually the worst car for me, I drive a '12 335i F30 with below mods. Although a diesel model would've been ideal for me, when I saw I could get 30mpg with regular fuel on a powerful car, performance outweighed the MPG when comparing to the diesel offerings, which are much slower and less mod friendly.

it will most likely cost a lot more which will kill all fuel savings... unless price is close to regular 328 i don't see why people so excited about it

Monetary concerns aside, only having to fill up with gas every 500+ miles is actually very convenient. You don't think about this difference until you drive diesel for awhile.

Thanks for posting.

I wonder if BMW NA intends to give us any details about the engine in conjunction with this presentation. The car did not appear to have a model badge on the decklid - just the xDrive badge on the left side as with other AWD F30 models.

i have "people" going to the show soon in montreal and they will be investigating. the presenter didn't say much in the video. it seems odd not to give details if they are announcing the car. then again i'm not sure why they did this in montreal but not detroit. the next show is here in toronto when i will personally be able to pry open the hood if they don't give us the info.

Whoever's there should try and pull the VIN of the show car. With the VIN, we can then see exactly how it's configured.

There is a much better market in the province of Quebec and in the rest of Canada for a diesel car that what there is in USA. That probably the reason why it was presented in Montreal.

agreed. diesel is much cheaper in canada. i mentioned this because i just thought it odd they didn't show it in detroit for the americans if they are bringing it to both canada and the states.

By any chance, did you just look at the stock photo, without reading the PR?

That's why I'm asking for VIN. VIN -> BMW ASAP -> exact specs.

I see your point the "4-cylinder diesel will premiere in the 3 Series Sedan" won't necessarily mean 320d, it could be the 328d after all

they only have 2 four cylinder engines that this engine could be. the one from the 320d (180ish hp) or the twin turbo from the 125d (215 hp).

Gadget lovers will want to know that they changed it from 328d to "3 Series Diesel".
http://www.montrealautoshow.com/uplo...ments_1501.pdf

I sat in it. No reference to 328d at all.

Surprise; it is a 6-cyl. diesel! And max. power happens at a very high 5800rpm.

Thanks to xdrive, goofy SUV wheel gap.

Of course, the sales rep was more interested in his Blackberry than to answer question. lol.

Nevertheless he told me that it was coming in Canada in July.
