They should have never tested on a public road. It was needlessly dangerous to the test driver and to the public.

That test was highly negligent and reckless.

Maybe BMW can use this to influence a change in safety requirements, and make it illegal to have unsafe trailers on the roads without proper bumpers to prevent this kind of tragedy in the first place.

This was not a high speed test, this is what happens without proper lower bumpers in place.

Very very sad.
It's the awful events and devastating, almost explicit pictures like this that hit home the reality of danger on the road and encourage change, in pursuit of advanced safety. A sole vehicle can only do so much and I agree that bumper height and design legislations need to be changed on trucks.
My condolences also go out to family and friends of this man, and to his colleagues at BMW, but hopefully some good can come out of this and more lives can be saved.

errr... NO! Actually, here in Germany our trucks (LKW's) have very low bumpers. Much better(lower!) than what passes for a bumper on US trucks in the USA. Over here the truck bumpers are quite low.

Clearly not all trailers have the correct safety bumper, [like your first pix!] because the trailer hit did not have anything there to stop the car.

Well first of all, it's not the US. We all drive that fast and even faster. My 60 year old mom goes 120 mph almost every day. Nothing too special about it. Things like that happen though once or twice a year but it's still safer than driving in California at least. The drivers here suck... and they only go 75 mph.

Those few stupid truck drivers that do not checking their mirrors correctly... I had some close calls myself on the A92. It's a great Autobahn with many straight stretches where I managed 208 mph (338 km/h) but you have to be very cautious.

Why not? It sounds like a big test to you guys but it's something everyone does everyday. These things just happen.

Unhappy

RIP

I hope the negligent truck driver is found guilty of manslaughter at the least. For failing to properly check his mirrors he cost someone their life.

Its stupid to have them do high speed tests on public roads, even though theres no speed limit, doesnt mean you need to speed excessively, Im sure he was doing as he was told by bmw so this isnt his fault.
No it's the truck drivers fault. Only cause it's a test doesn't mean it's out of the ordinary. Most of us BMW owners drive at least (and I mean at least) 100 mph every single day. I pass the 150 mph every single day (when I am back home in Germany) and no I am not a official test driver. And you know what makes BMW so good... because it is the ultimate driving machine which is tested not only on unrealistic tracks, but also on the public road including the Autobahn.

This is a very sad thing and my prayers go to his family and the truck driver who probably won't be able to continue his job and will have a life full of regret.
