Leased vs Buy
Bimmer lovers,
I am doing this poll to see how many people lease and how many people buy. The reason for this is that I am trying to figure which one to do and honestly these cars are not cheap and it look like alot of people are getting these cars. Also once you vote can you please add in the thread you car specs. THANKS!!! |

I went with a lease because when these cars need repair after warranty, they will literally leave a huge hole in your pocket.
My 2006 325i, had a water pump and thermostat replaced, leaking oil pan fixed, and starter replaced in the two years I've had it. I had a feeling that there were soon going to be some transmission problems so I traded it in for the F30 under a lease. I like the idea of not having to worry about repairs and maintenance which is why I went into the 48 month lease. In 4 years, you get the 80,000km factory warranty and free maintenance. I'll probably keep leasing in the future since I like the peace of mind. |

So far, first 335i buyer...
Mainly because I like keeping cars well beyond their age, where they return me the most value. I've had a car for 5 years and now it's going to be worth quite a bit for a down payment for the said 335i. |

Always lease unless you plan on keeping the car for YEARS and plan on spending money on extended warranty/repairs. Lease and keep getting a brand new car every 3 years. Good luck!

Had my last car for 9 years so I bought again. Amortized cost made it well worth it.
The buy vs lease question is a personal one and only you know your financial situation well enough to say which is best for you. |

Having to sell your car private party when your done with it and having to haggle over the price is a PIA. Also, you can ding up the lease car a bit and not have it cost you any money, where it would hurt resale value on the back end if you couldn't just hand it back in. Wanna just trade in a purchased vehicle? The dealership is going to give you very poor value for it compared to private party, so you're just going to get hurt on the back end. When you lease, you're also protected from changes in market conditions which could affect value and/or ease of selling, and don't get penalized for buying a car with less desirable features. You want ugly color seats? Manual tranny? No heated front seats? No navigation? On a lease not having these options means nothing. Good luck reselling with that configuration. Lastly, the more expensive the car you get (say an M5 or M6), the fewer buyers there are in the market for your car and the harder it is to sell. It makes more sense to lease IMO as the car gets pricier. |

Leasing is not more expensive than financing if you get a good deal.
My lease is for 3 years and 45,000 miles, and currently a 3 year old E90 with 45,000 miles sells for far less (which means it depreciated more) than what my down + monthly for 3 years will be. Plus, I get a new car every 3 years that's 100% free under BMW's maintenance plan. There's no point in keeping a BMW for 6-7 years and having it be worth peanuts (look at E46 330i prices now) unless you absolutely love the car and plan on keeping it forever. |

i'm in the same position as the OP.
i've financed 4 of my last 5 cars (paid cash for the 5th). the mileage restrictions on leases have always scared me away, but the rate i've been exchanging cars (sometimes they're gone in 1-2 yrs) i'm considering a lease. one thing i'm considering is doing the lease, but when i go on my road trips (900+ round trip once/twice a month) i could rent a car. everyone's situations different and i think a lot of it boils down to what do YOU feel comfortable with. either way you're losing money i like people who lease because when they bring it back in after the term it usually is a nicely maintained, low-mileage CPO car which is a perfect way to buy a BMW, imo. just some of my thoughts; good luck to you! matt |

But then, I've actually owned (all of my) BMWs out of warranty, so I don't suffer from the FUD factor that helps provide us (relatively) cheap cars on the used market. |

The ratio between buy and lease is pretty much par for the course.
BMW leases are usually around 50%, even in the middle of model years. A lease can cost a bit more, if the residual is true and loan/cash buyer can actually sell it for that amount after the lease term. Most buyers buy for much longer ownership. I like to change cars more often, so buying is a risky proposition, and it ties up my money in down payment, hoping to get it back after the sale. Also, I don't do more than 12K per year, and that mileage is the sweet spot along with a 3yr lease term. |

I buy / finance my cars at a credit union at very low interest rates, no cash down and long amortization to keep my payments low and to maximize my flexibility as I like to switch cars every 2 years. For example my 2011 X3 3.5 has a monthly payment of $685 with 3.5 percent interest for 6 year term. I will trade this for my ordered 2013 328i. From my perspective leasing is restrictive and the payments are similar. Everyone's situation is unique.

Lease doesn't make sense in Texas because we have to pay full sale tax.

As mentioned, there's no right or wrong answer--depends on what you want and your financial situation. That said, I'm most intetested in the least amount of money being spent in the long run, so I buy. In terms of monthly cost, I paid less than $300 per month (including all fees and taxes) for my recently traded in E46 330i, when I take my purchase price, subtract my trade in price, and divide by months owned. I wouldn't have been able to touch that with a lease!

As everyone mentioned before leading if u have tax benefits then go for it. For me I only drive occasionally for work mainly for personal use so buying it made sense.
