F30 335i M Sport rips 0-60mph in 4.6 secs in Jun '13 Car & Driver, finishes 2nd

Just got my Car & Driver Jun '13 issue today. In it comes an interesting comparo between the BMW F30 335i M Sport, Cadillac ATS 3.6, and Lexus IS350 F Sport.

Couple of interesting developments...

1) The F30 pulled off a 0-60mph in 4.6 secs. That's the fastest I've ever seen for a 335i with the N55 motor.

2) F30 finishing in 2nd behind the Lexus (!).

Check out the 8 pages attached for the full review.

Regards,
HMR.

Wow, the other two put up 0-60 and 1/4 times that the 328 does lol.

Good to see MSport has better braking distances than earlier tests.

That's why the 328 is kickin' butt in its class. It's pretty clear that in the F30, the 328 is the way to go unless you just have to have the extra speed/power.

The sport auto is no faster in acceleration. It is fun on the track though.

It's all about the better RFT tires compared to early tests for both accel and braking.
I agree about the steering, too bad BMW.
That's one of the biggest things I USED to love about BMW, but this dead on-center feel really annoys me, and transitional handling has no life felt in the steering, so it's not just me and my 335i M sport, it's the F30.

BMW, FIX IT and quick!

Personally, I don't know what C&D are talking about. Yes, the sport and adaptive sport suspension is softer than the E90, but it absorbs bumps quite well and with a single thump, and that's when set to sport, which is where I set it about 99% of the time.
In comfort mode road imperfection and bumps are absorbed even softer and quieter.
I'l have to try the new Lexus to see how much better it can be since C&D seem to think it's a big difference.

Back to tires, I see the Lexus us running a summer touring non RFT, so that helps explain the better ride quality.
But, surprisingly that tire gives the Lexus nearly the same braking distance.
Skid pad shows the touring tires limits, but the slalom is impressive for such tires.

We have to keep this comparo in perspective too. The Lexus won by 1 point, and most of that is about the fit and finish, more comfy ride, and better high speed handling, which as I said I don't get as my Msport has excellent bump absorption and great highway ride especially if you set it to comfort on long runs.
The BMW loses because it got the lowest "fun to drive". Really? It's that much less fun to drive than the Lexus AND the ATS? They both got a 22 to BMW's 19.

Nice find, Thanks for posting. That is a really fast 0-60 time for a 335i, MotorTrend I believe had it pegged at 4.7 sec.

+1

I enjoy my 328 but it seems bmw really needs to tweak a few things on the F30, especially with the 335i. As far as I recall, it hasn't won a comparison yet, that is quite unusual.

They needed the VSS. But I'm surprised they didn't like the optional Adaptive M Suspension.

To be fair, it lost by a point. And the areas where it scored worse are fairly subjective. The performance figures are impressive. It also had near perfect scores in the powertrain category.

I think a better measure is how many 335i owners want to sell their cars to buy the lexus based on that... not many I reckon..

So let me get this straight...

It's the fastest, most fuel efficient, quietest, most spacious, most practical and best looking in the test and it finished 2nd?

These car magazines have become a joke and it is no wonder they give them away $10 for a 60 month subscription. Might as well have Fox News give its "unbiased" opinion. Not.

Drag strip rather than road?

I know the BMW figures are obtained with a standard DIN spec, which I believe is 90% fuel level and 75kg test equipment ballast. That is why most Euro acceleration times are easy to beat.

This.. Even though the F30 wasn't the 'winner', this article makes me feel SO much better about my decision!.... But I am jelous that the 335 doesn't come with LSD. WTF!?!

That Lexus is one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen, even worse in person.

Every post in here, existing and in the future, will defend the BMW, as will I. So in a sense, it will all be in some form cognitive dissonance.

All I know is, if it was a stick, maybe it's a decent car. If it had a HUD, maybe it's a cooler car. That digital tach is pretty nice though. But if it comes next to me on a light and wants to race, I'll beat it comfortably with my M Sport.

Nice! I think it's official now. This is the end of long lasting 328 vs 335 dogfight.

328 8AT 0-60 5.6 seconds
335 8AT 0-60 4.6 seconds

One whole freaking second in this range is awesome! Considering MT rated 335 8AT as 4.7 seconds, I guess these numbers are very reliable. Sweet!!

Nothing the M performance parts bin doesn't address:
Steering weight increases
Suspension stiffens up

Pretty sure it has VSS since you can't get one without the other in the US.
