Interesting in reading this thread, I don't have an F30 but a March 2012 E89 Z4 with N20 engine, can I ask please is the sound your getting common to the N20 engine variants or 35is?
The sound I'm getting is a high pitched whine from cold start, quite loud at times but subsides once warmed up but is still there albeight hardly noticeable as a background noise so is tolerable. The Zed has been in twice to have this looked at. First time the dealer replaced the turbo waistgate solenoid valve which didn't work. Second time they said it was normal after they compared the sound to another Z4. I've mentioned it on various Z4 forums and get a mixed reaction of no sound to whining and wailing lol. I have found one or two internet road tests with the N20 engine where its mentioned an engine whine. The car drives perfectly but it just sounds rubbish when warming up It seems to me that its just a character trait of a common shared component. Tim. |

At the dealer now. I took the service manager out for a ride to demonstrate the binding sound from the steering column. He mentioned that a dealer employee also complained about the same problem in his new F30 and had been turned away as the service department couldn't replicate the sound.
At least the service manager is my witness. Hopefully, I will get an answer. |

Hey guys - I have a 2013 April build 328 with m sport package and just starting hearing this now after 18,000 miles. Is there any new information on this? Are you guys still dealing with this or did the noise eventually go away?

Adding my car to this - f30 328i, build date Feb. 2013. The high pitched sound is a bit like squeaking brakes - at first I thought it was my brakes, and then I thought it was the brakes of cars around me. It's pretty annoying.

Same problem here. 4/13 build 328ix. Only seems to happen when re-starting car with the engine already warm and AC is OFF. If I toggle the AC button on and off, it disappears.

So I have had this happen to me as well. I am a little concerned on how this is affecting early models. I'm a 2015 35i and noticed it about 5 times in a year. Looks like the steering wheel might be the culprit. Any updates?

I have this as well on my 2012 328i (11/11 build). Lately, it seems to be happening a bit more frequently for some reason. As others have mentioned, it usually goes away in a couple of minutes so not a big deal, but I'm really curious as to what could be causing it.

I had the high pitch "interfering" type of sound in my 13 F30 335. Never bothered to take it in so I could not replicate it on demand.
It usually happened at night time during the first 5 minutes of driving... the high pitch sound lasted about 3 or 4 secs and gone away and came back and yah..... Got my 15' F36... within the first 5000 miles, i start noticing the same sound again  but it is not as loud and dramatic as the F30 but it is still there.... The exact same behaviors.... |

I started hearing a 'noise' on my way home 2 days ago. I turned off the AC and the noise went away. I haven't heard it since, but with my warranty expiring soon on my 2013 (10K away in mileage from warranty expiry), mine is directly related to the AC -- need to know if I can take it in for repair (even though I can't replicate the issue 'on demand'), and what it could be?

Is this the noise?
I was able to record this noise in the cabin of my 2012 328i (F30), was wondering if this is the same thing everyone else is experiencing or if this is different. It happens at any speed, and sometimes gets so loud I have to roll the windows down to drown out the noise. It comes in bursts. See video! Please help!

I'm so glad you posted this. I actually recorded it as well in my car, but only audibly on my I-Pod. It sounds EXACTLY like what you are hearing. I have a 2015 435i Gran Coupe production date 12/14. Thank god it only happens very rarely. It is so strange because it doesn't vary in pitch or change with different gears or speed the car is moving. It's always that sound and I think I've even came to a stop and heard it (I think, but maybe it was only almost a complete stop). This makes me think it might be electronic through the speakers. Noises are crazy things and in all honesty you may think you know where it's coming from and its something completely different.
Had a creak that I could have swore was coming from my upper left headliner or lower footwell driver side. Dealer found it and it was the freakin' motor mount! NEVER would have believed it. Anyway this high pitch whine sounds somewhat common and we see it's been going on for years...c'mon BMW what is going on? |
