AFE Pro Dry S vs. K&N Filter

Looking to get a drop in filter. You see the title, so which one would you get? Pros and cons of both filters? Thanks!

I replaced mine last September with the aFe pro dry, but I never tried K&N, so I can't compare. I think they're very similar though, and will offer similar benefits.

FWIW, I noticed an immediate difference in throttle response, as the accelerator felt a bit more twitchy, but in a good, always-ready-to-roll kind of way. Definitely felt less laggy, but I'm sure it was mostly placebo.

It replaced the OE filter:

both of them offer the slightest gains in performance, barely noticeable increase at the expense of less dirt filtration into your engine. I would personally stick to OEM.

^ This. Higher flow = more debris. The performance gains are negligible.

K&N is what I went with. Had a BMS intake but it was giving a rough idle and throwing MAF codes. Didn't want to spend $100 on an air filter and know K&N is a reputable brand. I think it has performed just as good as my BMS intake, and have nothing to complain about for the price! IMO you don't have to worry about particles getting in your engine from an air filter with more airflow, it's still a very fine filter, just not as thick.

I think K&N is fine if you drive mainly on sealed roads. I had K&N filters on my Subaru and it gave me no issues with engine wear. I'd maybe go through 1L of oil every 10,000km. Then, I took a long drive on a dusty gravel road and overnight the engine started to use oil at 1L every 3,000km.

I'm 99% certain my Subaru now has a dusted engine. I'd never put K&N on my F31.

Thanks. I did notice the price difference and the K&N is looking more attractive. I was concerned about the increased air flow and dust getting through. However, since I'm in Florida I don't think I will have to worry about that issue.

I actually bought a K&N filter but returned it before opening it because of reading a few threads about the oil residue it leaves, even brand new out of the box, not when over re-oiling it for maintenance. That made me reconsider.

Ended up buying the afe pro dry drop in. Very happy with it. Noticeable difference in intake sound and more improved throttle response. But pricey. In Canada, turns out to be almost double what the K&N costs.

Decisions, decisions. Here the prices for the pro dry are about $15-$20 more

Did you get it? i'm tempted, I had it in my Subaru, noticed very little turbo spool noise. So, not sure if the $77 are worth it for just a little bit of turbo noise.

I decided to stick with OEM for now. Just FYI Amazon has the afe pro dry for about $67

I've used K&N filters for many years and pretty much all my cars. Performance is negligible. It's really the simple matter of cost.
Cars never had any issues.
Let dry the filter for a few days prior to installing it.
Don't go nuts in oiling it during routine maintenance.
I clean MAF annually anyways and never notice any oil gunk.

Did you notice any more dust/dirt then usual when you cleaned the maf sensor after you switched from the regular paper filter?

Cleaning the sensor is something I want to do soon. What compound do you use to clean the sensor?

Honestly I would just save and go with an intake man. I got the injen intake and it actually makes a difference. Drop ins are a waste of money imo unless you just don't want to keep buying filters.
