Read your charger's manual to be sure it's a smart charger. Most all of them are these days, unless you bought a $15 special from Harbor Freight.

As chiefneil said, make sure it's a "maintainer" as opposed to an old school trickle charger. Newer chargers will stop charging once the battery is topped off. Old trickle chargers never stop charging so the battery can overheat.
I'll admit, most folks use the two terms interchangeably these days. Just us old farts pre-date the intelligent maintainers. |

The dealership let on that should my battery die BMW will replace it free of charge only if I was using a BMW charger to maintain it (presumably during winter months and long periods of inactivity). So by buying a $180 charger i am covered for the loss of an $80 battery. Who thinks this stuff up?

How would the dealer even know if you were using a charger? I've had many batteries replaced under warranty/maintenance on cars that weren't using chargers. Of course this is in phoenix where the summer temps kill batteries so it's very common. You're in Canada though so maybe things are different up there. Here's the charger I use. It's overkill and you can get a cheaper Battery Tender for $45. Battery Tender is what BMW rebrands. Porsche rebrands the CTEK. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...rch_detailpage |

http://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G3500-Ult...0032171&sr=1-3 For keeping the battery topped off in cold weather and/or long periods of not driving the 1.1 amp is adequate, but it's not that much less expensive. And you're right, BMW doesn't make a charger, they re-brand one. The idea that using a non-BMW branded charger would void a battery warranty is nonsense coming from a dealer who wants you to buy your charger from him. |

How does the dealer know? They ask and the owner, not suspecting a screw over, answers honestly. SURPRISE |

I can't see any reference to folding mirrors. I have that unit, it works very well. I added a permanent harness that connects to the under the hood charging posts, with the plug in accessed through the grille. The charger is on a shelf in my garage, all I have to do is plug it in to the harness when I park.
