I'd rather rent a Bimmer and put all of the other stuff out of mind. Ironically my car was delivered in SoCal while I was over in Germany last summer.

I did do the factory tour a few years back and I recommend that for anybody going to Munich.

you two are crazy! LOL

Snowghost... Why PAY to rent a vehicle when you could have your own? Perhaps you can rent a vehicle with no monetary exposure from a damage waiver, but personally, i would be more worried about the rental getting damaged and the hassles from THAT ocurring.

Puma... What on earth are you talking about with regards to them prepping the vehicle? Do you think the people in the Welt will do worse than the 21 year old at your local dealer that will be at a new job 10 months from now? Your car will be immaculate at BOTH deliveries...at the Welt, AND at your home dealer.

your car is safer parking on the street in Germany (where people care about vehicles) than it is at most general locatons in the US. I was advised to stay away from FRANCE, as the French don't have the same concern for cars that Germans do. If you do the research on your hotel options... many offer an underground carpark (Tiefgarage) option for a nominal fee or it is included with your hotel stay.

I will say that there was one factor I wasnt prepared for... RAIN. The moment my car was delivered.. it began to rain outside... So the " never driven in rain" thing certainly vanished right away.

To each his own however...

Day 7 - drop off

Nice write up. I've done ED three times and each time the drop off was several miles from the airport in Munich and it was not convenient to public transportation. Please tell me more about the new drop off point at the airport. Thanks!

I just did an ED this past October and dropped off in Munich.

The drop off point is literally in the airport. You can just hop on the train and go 1 stop or walk to the the terminal.

Location is:

LOGINOUT GmbH - Airport Munich

Terminalstrasse Mitte 20
50 meters before the Hotel Kempinski at the right site.)

85356 Oberding (Flughafen München)

Question for you. Were you required to get snow tires? We picked up our M6 in September and was told by BMW that after October 15 we would have to rent or buy snow tires and that was the law. Just wondering because planning a future trip again for the i8.
Thanks

We didn't need snow tires because we had all seasons on ours. They mentioned that if we had performance tires we would be required to get snows.

I got my car on 10/23 and had summer tires. Wasn't required to get snows. Although it is a rule, it isn't heavily enforced unless there is actually snow on the ground and the police see you slipping and sliding around. BMW doesn't make you rent/buy snow tires; they just suggest it and say it is still your choice.

Hi,

the need of wintertyres in germany is not linked by law to specified time period. It only says that you need winter tyres if there is snow on the road, black ice, .... So in general it might be that you already need winter tyres by mid or end of october due to the first snow falls but it could also be, that it is only required as from jan, pending on the actual weather conditions.

Then you should take a trip a bit further north

Great way to get the car delivered, looks like a great trip

Too bad it isn`t available for us, unless we buy a M6 GP

Thanks for sharing your ED moments. Color combo is perfect! Respect for picking up your Bimmer despite the winterly weather conditions in Germany during November. Can´t wait to visit again the Welt in Munich.

Congrats on the ED. The car is beautiful and it looks like you had a memorable trip.

I did a winter ED last year. To clear up the winter tire issue for anyone considering a future winter ED, BMW can be vague about your winter tire requirements upon delivery. It basically comes down to what the conditions are. And, you'll have to sign a document at The Welt acknowledging that you've been notified of the German law. If you have the wrong tires for the conditions, i.e. summer or all-season tires with snow and ice on the ground, and there's an accident, insurance will not cover you.

Renting winter tires in Munich is very expensive. I researched it before I went. I chose to rent a BMW 328d coupe. It was only a little more to rent the car than just a set of winter tires and wheels.

Lastly, the weather in Germany can change very quickly. It can be clear and then start to snow unexpectedly. My next ED will definitely be in the spring or summer.
