I've been doing FDL and VO coding with mine using the date set back method. I'm using a Mac running Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine via VMware Fusion. From now on I just keep the VM Suspended which preserves the date. The date kept changing back to the correct date itself initially but there was a preference within VMware to update the time from the Mac, once I unchecked that it was ok. I did once get a C157 error within e-sys when trying to read coding data but I just logged off and back on again and all was well.
A lot of faffing around but worth it I suppose. |

It wont go to waste. Launcher PREMIUM even with Date hack is on borrowed time. Newer psdzdata will at some point require a minimum version of E-Sys 3.3x, and then it is game over for Launcher PREMIUM.

All this prove we need an open source solution for the tokens.
For now these cars are fairly new, so no engine swap or hardcore mods or expensive dealer fixes alternatives have been done. For the average joe a phone app is good enough (enable windows with remote etc). But we will need a working e-sys in the future; If tokenmaster get hit by a bus crossing the street it's done; we take a 3-4 years setback. As far as I understand, he don't want people to re-sell his software and rip-off people(which is good), but E-sys launcher was distributed in such a misterious/non-existant way that many just gave off and paid 20$ to get it on a DVD from ebay. If he were to setup a Github so it can be downloaded easily it and have others look and improve the code it could : 1) Reduce the troubleshooting burden on him 2) Stop wasting his time replying to activation/license emails. 3)The BMW community would gain durable code that would be lasting for as long as e-sys will be used for the BMW products it works for (if we take on how long DIS/INPA was used at bmw.... e-sys will likely be around for 15 years easily) 4) If Tokenmaster gets bored of doing or has other thing come up in his life we don't end up with only pay to play solutions (various coding app or paid tokens as it used to be)

Having a free option also keep the price of the those which are distributed as payware in check.

Not sure what I think about Open Source. Nobody owns it nor ensures it is a quality build. Every time I'd use a new releases, I'd be worried about bricking an ECU... Personally I could care less about price. I have zero problem paying people for their developments. I don't know why so many people have no issue spending $100 on Armor All and Air Fresheners for their BMW, but whine about paying $50 -$100 for Coding software. It's a bizarre dichotomy. All I care about is that it is safe, works as it should, it is supported, and updates to the CAFD / FAFP Mapping are ongoing. For that, I am always willing to pay.

I have implemented many open source system as an IT professional.
Usually we pay a support package from the developper but the software itself or some features are free. Being open the code can be audited by everyone, therefor a flaw can be found which could have been missed by the developpers. A good exemple of this is Bitlocker disk encryption... Did microsoft put a back door in it for the NSA? Who knows as we can't check the code? The equivalent open source solution is Verakryp. The code has been thoroughly audited and is known to be free of vulnerabilites. Also, if have ever dealt with the irksome microsoft licensing system, the madness of the apparatus is a good enough reason in itself to switch to open source

I agree with Julienjj that an open source solution would potentially be far more robust.
Concerning the price, as a non-professional coding enthusiast I only code my own and my mum's car maybe once or twice a year. Spending 50-100 bucks for a license, even if it is for charity, is still a large amount for that. I also think that serves as a huge threshold for people wanting to start learning, thereby deminishing the coding community. Open source could be a solution to that. I wish Tokenmaster would reconsider and still release a Premium launcher every once in a while. Maybe not as frequently as he did, but just enough to keep occasional coders, like me, interested. He could even tie the license (RSA encoded of course ) to my car's VIN as a security measure, I wouldn't care if that meant being able to put some time into my hobby just for fun. But that's just my 2 cents... Cheers, Tony |
