Mileage readings - MPG version
Not sure if it is just my car - or if all Canadian versions may have an incorrect calcultion for MPG.
I know we mostly have the units set to l/100 kms (and I also normally do) but I noticed that when I set it to MPG that it is using the calculation for the USA gallon (as opposed to our "Imperial" gallon which is 4.5 larger. Therefore my MPG readings are actually 4/5 lower than they actually are. Just wondering if others are experiencing the same. Cheers Jim Cash |

Even thought I use l/100 most of the time - the "reason" why I would want to see it in "correct" Canadian MPG is quite simple.
For anyone riding with me who askes "what nileage do you get with this thing" I respond by showing them the l/100 display. Unfortunately the majority of those people are over the age of 50 - and then thay say - "what is that in MPG" - becasue they relate better to the older measurement system. So when I switch the display units ot the MPG setting they then say "that is not very good milage" - so I have to tell them that is using the USA gallon instead of the Canadian version. And then the next question is - "why on earth would BMW use USA measurement systems in a Canadian car?" I don't have the answer to that one - other than to say it must be a mistake because all my previous BMW's had both readouts and it was always the Imperial gallon calculation. I doubt they will correct it - but it can be confusing unless you twig to the fact it is the wrong calculation. |

They do use the Canadian measurement...it's called l/100km. Metric. Been around since the 70's. Tell the "old" people to look it up...they can do it on this thing called the "internet".

adding 1/4 to the US MPG to get Imperial is a pretty straight forward mental calculation as math goes!

In response to one reply - yes I still have the 540 - and having some difficulty justifying to myself a good reason for going to something new. I am still getting great performance - and 30+ MPG on the highway (that is imperial measure) but my wife's new 328Touring is certainly a better performing car - with better mileage (literage?) and better cabin features (mostly). The adaptive sport suspension, sport brakes and steering seem to work "very well".
The upcoming 4GC might be tempting. What I would really like is the 530d msport/individual. To the other 2 replies (math instruction and or age sarcasm) I can not see the point of your responding if you are not going to addrress the point. It was obvious that I was mostly using the "Canadian" l/100 readout version, and that I also knew the 4/5 difference. But my point was to highlight the fact that, on my car at least, the option to convert the readout to "MPG" (in the settings menu) gave you the reading for the USA gallon - and not for what is expected in a Canadian based car. I was expecting some others would chime in and either agree that it is the same for theirs or say that theirs was reading correctly. My E39 gives the reading in both version - and uses the Imperial gal - and I expected it to be the same with the current vehicle. I consider this thread - and check the readings in some other cars when I am at the dealer tomorrow. Cheers |
