The joys of owning a Golf R in the West Midlands - Car Thieves

Just prior to my Ban I took possession of a rather nice Golf R Estate.

I will do a write up when I have more time, however it really is brilliant to drive, it is to petrol what Oliver Reed was to alcohol (averaging 29mpg).

Anhyhow...back in September we had our first attempted burglary.

Woke up in the morning to find that Avocet locks do deter burglars.

The same night around 8 cars and 1 motorhome were stolen in the area.

The next attempt was put off by a mix of lights and angry dog.

I have also been followed twice lol, once was by youths on scooters obviously hanging around Waitrose and targeting certain cars, luckily I am uber paranoid lol.

Link to VW thread.

http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/22...cet-in-action/

This is just up the road from me.

https://www.expressandstar.com/news/...aulting-owner/

While the most common threads on this forum, the common threads on VWROC relate to stolen or attempted theft of Golfs.

The joys of owning a Golf R Estate, every Cnut wants to steal it lol.

If people have not yet went down the route of house security, get some Avocet and Ultion locks.

Good to see you back mate.

So in a nutshell, which is better (or more fun to drive) ..... the 330d or Golf R?

I’ve got the avocet locks, they are good locks.

Did you get any dashcam footage of the scrotes on scooters?

Sorry to hear about the attempt breaks, did you report them or just electrify the door handles for the next time?

No footage.

I had police around the same day, actual police and not just specials.

They are decent police around here.

Looks like an attempt to snap the locks. I love my ABS locks. Recommend them also.
My sister had all 3 cars nicked from Leeds about a week ago. They had ABS locks apart from one door...guess which door they got in via...

Garage List
Low life scrutters.

Had an attempted theft on Fat Kid 1 Focus St where some amateurs tried breaking the rear window seal to get in using the coat hanger method. Not sur3 if this caused the scratching to rear door panel or out of malice but cost him £300 or so.

Problem is car theft is regarded as a minor inconvenience and not punished adequately

Why are people hell bent on nicking cheap cars? I mean they're only like £230 a month!

scum bags! anyway defo recommend the ultion and avocet i have them on both doors. You might want to consider a hardened handle as well?such as mila prosecure where they don't have direct access to the euro cylinder

I have Mila and similar on my other doors, this was an outer conservatory, 2 inner after that one.

However it's now got a decent secure by design handle on now.

Probably the most expensive bit is replacing glass with security laminate stuff.

I hadn’t realised that the West Midlands was up north!

I wonder why they are stealing hot hatches in particular. Perhaps this is joyriding rather than trying to sell them. Otherwise why take a 1 Series when the more expensive models tend to share the same security measures so are just as easy to take.

Nephew had his taken from his folks Home in Solihull a few months back, while they were watching tv in the afternoon. Police recovered it 7 weeks later with about £7k worth of damage. Tossers had tinted/blackout the windows and were driving around committing criminal acts.Unfortunately got it back days before gap were going to pay out.

Thanks for the link to your unfortunate experience Brigand. An excellent lesson for a basic lock upgrade for our house.

And I'll keep WD40 well away from locks.

I guess this is the type of lock that people are recommending?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Avocet-AB...XpVaCrOuhbaRbA

I know it says anti-snap, but what is the difference between this and the normal lock that i have now? What makes it anti-snap?

If the lock handle body is pried away to expose the cylinder lock, and they attempt to snap-off the end of the cylinder to be able to turn the locking mechanism, the rotating barrel in the cylinder is locked immobile.

Probably more accurate to describe them as "snap" than "anti-snap".

Lock snapping uses a vulnerability where the lock barrel snaps right at the critical point allowing the handle to open. Anti snap locks have a weak point built into them so it snaps there rather than at the important locking mechanism.

I changed my locks to a matched pair of Ultion locks a month ago - the locksmith really rates them and said it was probably unnecessary to get a sold secure handle with these locks -
He charged me £75 per lock (and the matched pair comes with 3 keys) and gave me an extra 7 matched keys (for family/ dog walker etc) for £200 all in supplied and fitted (for 2x locks and 10 keys in total) keys are normally £10 each - the matched keys mean one key will open all the matched locks - so cuts down on the no of keys you need to get cut and carry - and no fumbling for the right key.

http://www.brisant-secure.com/ultion.php
and you don't lube them with a wet lube such as WD40 - you are recommended to use a graphite powder as lube.

video of lock snapping

FWIW, when the locksmith fitted my new locks, he destructively tested the existing ones in my door (he tool the handle off so not to damage the handle!) and opened the locked door in 8s from the outside by a method very similar to the above means. he reckoned if he said to anyone "if i can open your door in <20s, would you buy new locks?" everyone would say yes.
