Damn it, and I tought I clear myself of those urges by changing my 335i for a more settled X1.
Seems like the order placed for the new Arqray Quad pipe exhaust will have company...

We'll let the numbers do the talking. I'm sure some tuner will get a stock F30 335i and compare to their aftermarket F30 328i software, side by side, same day, same dyno, no BS. And then we'll see. Everyone place your bets. |

If this n20 can weigh 100lbs less than the n55 counterpart, there would be no question in my heart as to what I'd choose for fun factor

I don't get these arguments. I'm sure the 328 community shouldn't be complaining now because they have a tunable engine. From what I understand the N52 made absolute minimum gains for huge money being that it was relatively maxxed out and is a NA motor.
If you can get it to 335i territory great. Stop busting N55 balls. There is a reason why there is a separation between the models. N55 will always be faster, hence the higher premium. Get over it and be glad everyone can have fun tuning now! |

I have to admit, my primary interest in this application is the potential of the N20 in the X1, but only because it doesn't seem like there will be a 35 trim for it.
It doesn't have to be an Evo killer to be fun. |

Historically, I don't think the 328's have gotten the M-sport treatment that it's older brother gets here in Canada (that or just no one opts for it).
But if it does this time around, then things will definitely get interesting; as the suspension, brakes (if you opt for M-sport brakes), and chassis will thus be identical. The price difference here in Canada between a 328 and 335 is about 10k. But as packages on the 335 are usually cheaper. A M-sport 328 with M-sport brakes will probably run 8k less than a M-sport 335 with M-sport brakes. The Evolve-R tune for example can be installed and uninstalled at home without throwing codes. So a tune and an exhaust will be relatively safe in terms of warranty claims (nothing suspension, brake, or chassis wise (high warranty risk items) needs to be done, as they'll be the same as the 335). So roughly 4k (1k for tune, 3k for full exhaust) will have a 328 running pretty close to a 335. Another 4k for weight reduction (hood and trunk, or rims). So even stevens price wise, it makes for a pretty interesting car purchasing decision. |

own a 325/n52 and put alot of money on my mod habbit that result with minimal gains. Close to 335 or not, this is great news.
a 328 pushing anywhere from 265-290hp will put a big smile on any owners face lets say, Tune $800 Oem performance intake $900 Full catback exhaust $1000 cooling..etc $800 a ricer sticker $5 total: $3505 not bad

The n20 will be a fantastic mod-able motor. Coming from a 4 cyl turbo car now, (Evo) I see no reason why a full exhaust, intake and a tune wouldn't yield close to 300 at the wheels. The engineering from BMW will certainly allow for such gains. I know that the inline 6 has been traditional for BMW, but switching it up never hurt anybody and the driving factor from this lightweight setup should make for a fantastic driving experience.

So there is a HUGE difference between a 2.0 engine, and a 2.5 or a 3.0 engine. That's why the 328i which is a 2.0 cc engine would be very attractive to buyers outside the US and Europe (Not sure if European countries have similar import duties). |

also this....
"Interesting note - according to BMW, the 328i handles even better than the 335i out of the box. Due to its lighter engine, the 328i has the perfect balance while the 335i is more powerful in a straight line but a bit less balanced."

Ok so I have ordered a Z4 with the N20 engine, however in the 20i version because insurance is killing me on pricing for more HP.
What are the differences between the 20i & 28i version besides software mapping? Would it be possible for me to get the 184bhp 20i to 250bhp from the 28i without spending a small fortune on rebuilding the engine? |

What will be interesting about the n20 is if the injector/fuel pumps are the same as the n54/n55's. if that's the case, there should be plenty of headroom for power upgrades in the fuel department. the turbo/manifold will likely be the limiting variable here (air). i bet within a year or 2, an aftermarket company will release a turbo and manifold upgrade for this engine. i imagine an n20 with a GT35R turbo would put out impressive power figures.
