While tidying my engine bay i found this...

BIMMERPOST

Botched paint job found at the top edge of the bumper. It's roughly 10 cm in length. I recently bought this vehicle new from the dealership, what would you do if you are in my situation?

Kinda hard to tell but looks like it might be scuffing from the hood touching the bumper.

What I'd do? Make sure hood is adjusted so it doesn't rub anymore, find something else to worry about. It's super hard to see, you're the only one who will ever notice it, and life happens.

Is it actually scratched through the paint, or is some type of black substance? I had a few of these marks on my hood as well and was able to remove them with a little Goof-Off.

Mmm, I don't think it's caused by the rubbing since the hood is 100% fine. Haha it'll take some time for me to get over it.

I don't say its scratched, but it's definitely a defect rather than contaminant since it is rough to touch and it doesn't rub off :/

Mine was tough to the touch as well, but it came off. Try some Goof Off, it works wonders.

It could residue from the plastic shipping wrapper that didn't get fully removed. Trying to get it off may do more harm than good, so I'd let the dealer attend to it. That way if he breaks it he fixes it.

think you would be fine to take it to the dealer and have them apply some touch up paint to just that line, buff and wax over it, should make it "almost" invisible, (under warranty of course) Probably don't want them to repaint the entire front piece more danger of the paint not matching

I had this residue in a number of spots on my car when I got it. I was just helping my dad clean some of it off of his brand new X5M.
It?s hard for the vehicle prep guys to get all of it when they likely have a whole cue of cars to get to

Hope it's just residue! If not, a new paint job will suck.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It’s really not that bad, and you can use touch up paint as xlover said. For something this minor, it’s not worth it to go through a whole new pain job.

Yes, I said pain job - cause it’s a pain in the ass.

Waiting for BMW to fix it and the fact that it’s there in the first place.

Yea, it's raised and rough and above the paint. I took some eucalyptus oil and WD-40 from work, hopefully It will remove it with ease. I will update you guys with the result

since the car was purchased brand new from dealer, do bring it back and CA to get the top detailing guy to check it out. If it is not damaged paint then it should be handled by the detailing guy who is responsible to get all shipping materials cleaned up before delivery.

The thing is I bought this vehicle from a different city, so it will take me 8 hours just to get back to them. If i can't remove it, the detailer who I have an appt with for ceramic coating will assess it for me. And if they can't remove it as well then I'll go to my nearest dealership and ask them nicely about it.

It saddens me to say that my efforts were in vain. Oh well, time to move on to bigger things.

The dealership won?t do anything? If you just bought this car new, you should have a case for them to do some type of repair on it. If not, like others said, it?s not a big deal. Just make sure to clean the area well and clear coat it if it?s not sealed well to the bumper.

I'd have it looked at by your local Dealership. Paint guarantees are supported by BMW corp, not up to the dealership, but they'll get the ball rolling for you.

Best of luck, get it fixed! Shouldn't cost you more than some time..
