I agree with you that portions of the Lexus interiors feel cheap. For example in my car the "aluminum" is actual real aluminum, in many of the Lexus products its a brushed plastic. It doesn't feel or look as good. The switch gear in my wife's RX isn't as nice as it was in our X3. The infotainment you do get used to but its NEVER as good as iDrive.

The Lexus however is thousands less, new or used...many thousands really. Also the overall built quality and fit and finish in the Lexus products is better than BMW in many respects. The RX rattles less and its quieter inside than our X3 was and compared with my F30? I you might as well put the windows down in the Lexus to compare to my F30...

The reliability has been fantastic on the Lexus, it basically doesn't break. At all...period and the dealership experience is tremendous. Much MUCH better than my BMW experience. Also the Lexus IS and GS in F Sport guise drive more sporty than BMW's equivalent products, which is really odd thing to say but its true.

At the end of the day thought, I felt the turbo 6 coupled with the ZF8 in the BMW was a better drivetrain combo than anything I could get in Lexus for a reasonable price. BMW still has the better overall package but Lexus has been doing things right for a very long time and that appears as if it's going to continue.

The Lexus GSF has me looking...(CPO)
If I were ever going to buy a used car, I'm not talking CPO, I'm talking like, used... I would get a 5 or 6 year old Lexus GS something or other. Boring as all shit but decent power, roomy and would literally run forever. Lexus is insanely reliable and has been forever. BMW is recently climbing up the reliability ranks (if you put stock in CR etc.) but thats recent.

I haven't found anything yet with the powertrain of the Bimmers though. The turbo 4 or turbo 6 and the 8 speed auto are impossibly good. Maybe not for hardcore performance driver bros or whatever but for a daily driver, its magic. Thats what I drive Bimmers for. Oh and the seats.. The sport seats in this and my last 3 are ridiculously good. I once did a 10 hour straight drive from Redding CA to L.A. in my 320 with the sport package with literally zero fatigue.

I have this used E90 328i sedan build that literally does not exist in the universe but if it did, I would buy that because it could be had for like $10k with about 70k miles on it. Sedan, RWD, saddle brown interior, non sport package, no iDrive, heated seats, xenons. Ive seen a build like this on a YouTube video once and have been searching for it forever. Every used e90 328 out there has the shit halogens and if it doesn't its loaded with that horrid iDrive system. I would take the old fashioned no idrive, like ten grand, the rate I drive (10-12k miles per year) I could get like 3-4 good years out of it.

2007 X5 (35i) was purchased new (wife's car). She didn't drive it much, but all maintenance was done. At around 25k miles, she was driving and there was a loud bang and the engine just died. Guessing a thrown rod. Since it was out of warranty, BMW here quoted $6k just to pull and inspect the engine to see what was wrong. Really turned her off so we ended up selling the car for cheap (to someone who was probably able to fix it himself for almost nothing). Never found out what was wrong, but saw it driving about a month later.

2008 BMW 335i (e90) - HPFP issue. Engine cut out on the freeway, not fun. Car was only 6 months old. No other issues after that. Great car.

2008 BMW M6 (e63) - Bought used. Had about 45k on it when something failed, flooding the engine with fuel. Fortunately it was under warranty so everything was fixed. Not cool though.

2014 BMW 335i (F30) (current car) - Bought this one new as a custom build. It has been nothing but trouble. Charge pipe failure 3 times. Twice while accelerating on the freeway. Also had an oil leak which was not fixed properly (took it in 3 times total). Leaked oil damaged one of the belts, causing it to weaken and snap while driving, completely losing power. BMW ended up replacing pretty much all the hoses/gaskets and a bunch of other minor things (again around 45k miles). Got an extended warranty on this one so I have a couple more years on it.

My wife got a 2013 Lexus RX to replace her X5 (ironically two weeks after my 335i was delivered). She has had zero issues with it so far, compared to mine having to be towed once or twice a year. If you get the upgrades on the Lexus, the interior is far and above all but the best BMW has to offer. The seats are comparable to the luxury seats I had on my M6, so comfortable, and have heating and cooling. Drives pretty great as well. As I and others have mentioned though, the computer system is absolutely horrendous.

Looks like I dodged a bullet. The LCI 340 has been issue free. They fixed the charge pipe issue on the N55. Just routine maintenance and minor stuff for me. Now at 31k miles. There was an issue reported for some MT cars that were recalled (a small number of VINs), other than that they have been solid. I do have extended warranty and maintenance on my car after hearing some horror stories so I'm covered. Great car to drive and own. Turns heads gets lots of positive comments as I haven't seen another car on the road exactly like mine even though it is mostly oem.

My 335i has been good overall. Had to do two minor repairs, window trim and a door lock actuator.

I don't really agree on the Lexus front with regard to the seats or interior quality. We also have an RX

Our BMW seats have been better than the Lexus seats (that's changed on the new Lexus products, those seats are fabulous) and the interiors generally lack organic materials and this is true on most (but not all) Lexus products.

Our Lexus has been rock solid though and in addition to being rock solid the dealership experience obliterates BMW.

Sounds like you have some shit luck when it comes to buying BMWs. I have had my current 335i for a year and not a single issue. I had my old 7 series and put tons of miles going to Davis and back to SF every week. Never had an issue for years. Maybe I'm just lucky...

Really looking at either the M340 or M3 several years down the line.

Around 2 years left on my 340xi lease. Looking to lease a G80 M3 if it is available by then, M340i if not and if it really surprises me. Also thinking about a CPO F-Type Coupe R or a CPO Porsche Macan Turbo.

Most German premium cars are ridiculously expensive here. I paid the equivalent of USD70K for mine. Despite a very good experience, I don't think I will do it again ... certain not if I stick to buying new.

I await the next generation Subaru WRX or BR-Z/GT86. I will only consider another BMW, most likely the next gen 2-series, if it is priced similarly to the Japanese cars which goes for around USD$35K here. I won't need to think too hard about this for another 3-4 years.

My preferences are changing and quickly: BMW might keep me in with the new 5-er, possibly the G20 2nd MY. Not sure what it is but there's something about MB and Audi that doesn't sit well with me nor do their designs attract me. If I was forced to choose one car right this second, I would end up in a 530e and be done with it. Sucks that I'd lose the all-digital dash/instrument cluster though. (hate that hybrid)

What do you think your next car will be?
Something that is not listed above that is worth a good look is the 440i GC. It is really sporty with the sloped back, the hatchback is sweet with lots of storage. The model change is 1 year later than the F30 so it is still new till 2020. The center of gravity is a little lower so it handles better. I would order with MPPSK (355 HP/369 lb-ft) as it makes the car so much better of a driver. The Dinan Stage 1 kit will put you to 426 HP and 468 lb-ft (w/MPPSK) for M3 numbers without the insurance cost. You have enough time to order with a "Individual" color for even more individualism and would most likely be in the cost range of the models above.

In other words, I have no idea.

Add the MPPSK (computer & exhaust), I have added the MPPK (computer) and MPE (exhaust) on my 335i. I added these item a year into my ownership and I can tell you it changes the entire driving dynamics. My car is more responsive, it really wakes up the engine above 5,500 RPM, the sound has a deeper growl and the engine burbles very nicely (but not too loud to irritate neighbors). GetBMWparts has it for $2,867 (with chrome tips), but it is worth every penny.
