BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics MPG

Hi All,

I know this is a "how long is a piece of string" type of conversation because there are so many variables, temperature, driving stye etc but what kind of fuel economy are people getting from 320d EDs.

My standard drive is 120 miles a day on a lightly-congested motorway (M25) at 75-80 mph with some drives in the country/ London driving at the weekend.

I have a 320D SE (not the same, I know) and don't get a decent run in it all that often (only about seven or eight of over an hundred miles since I got it [1st September and 4000 now on the clock]) so it's mainly pottering around locally and I'm averaging about 55mpg (depending on the accuracy of the odometer) but I rarely exceed the speed limits either here or on the couple of occasions I've been to France/Belgium.

This is based on cumulative mileage divided by cumulative fuel used (tank filled until it stops automatically and no more).

I've started using EcoPro when in town or heavy traffic but it doesn't make a lot of difference - although I am a cruise control addict.

Hi Baz, thanks for the response, those figures are good particularly as they are calculated rather than from the OBC. Probably should be possible to squeeze at least 60mpg from an ED then, anyone else got any experience?

I've got an ED with Sports Auto, currently on 10k miles. On that sort of run I get between 55 and 65 mpg depending on conditions, temperature, wind, how often I drop it into DS or manual mode to give it some extra "go", how much the aircon is on etc. I tend not to notice much difference in mpg between ECO-PRO and Comfort modes but mpg in Sport / Sport+ is worse though that could be down to driving it harder when in Sport mode.

I have been running a 320d ED Automatic since September 2012 and now have 3600 miles on the clock. Most of my trips are about 10 miles in length and about 90% is on a free flowing dual carriageway. Passengers not normally carried.

My lifetime average to date has been 64 mpg as calculated by brim to brim figures and not the on board computer, which tends to be anything up to 5% optimistic.

I expect this figure to improve in the warmer temps and as the engine continues to loosen up.

By comparison, my previous car, a Generation 3 Prius Hybrid, gave a corrected, 65 mpg, over 13k miles in three years.

I drive the BMW faster than the Prius in order to use 8th gear. Had I driven the Prius at the same speed I estimate that the lifetime average would have been closer to 60 mpg.

Wow, that's outrageously good! Are you driving like a mouse on the dual carriageway - i.e. staying below 70mpg and really light on the throttle?

Hi Daveyc

It is a surprise to me that you think that 64mpg is such a good figure. However, it is a lifetime average and individual journey figures, after taking into account the 5% error produced by the on board computer, range from 58mpg to 74mpg.

To answer your question, on my normal 10 mile trip I drive at about 60mph on the dual carriageway. This is in ECO PRO mode and therfore light on the throttle. I also use a number of special driving techniques.

On such a short journey the time difference between 60mph and 70mph is minimal.

Currently averaging 53-55mpg on an auto ED with 7k on the clock. Not getting more than 600 miles per tank (brim to brim) and thats pushing the fuel warning light down to last 10 miles. I think Signpost's figures will be hard to beat.

Its a shame the fuel tank size is 5 litres short of my old E90 ED, as over 2 years of ownership my overall average MPG was 57 and achieved a personal best of 885 miles from a full tank.

Reducing the F30 fuel tank size (weight reduction) must be to compensate for the overall larger car in comparison to the E90.

Current weather and the car being an auto seems to be the culprit here. Keen to see whats it like when the weather improves.

That's not very good, my 330D did 620 miles on a tank on a careful ish week. I'm sure the 255 tyres would take off a good 2-3MPG.

You got 26MPG on the other forum, is that right?.
If so sounds great, but the fuel prices are set to "go through the roof" I may well change direction.

Yes, on the motorway 80 ish it will do around 27-28mpg on the computer. I am going to check this with a fill up, but so far I have done 350miles and there is 110mile range showing on the computer. That would equate to 26.1MPG which is fantastic for a 560BHP engine.

It even works in heavy traffic, it has ASS.....and you want it on just to hear that starter motor whine (very distinctive) and the bark when the engine fires. just wish it had less silenced exhaust, it definitely needs a loud button.

The Missus and I went to Belgium and back on Wednesday - returned with eight crates of stuff that's hard to get in the UK plus thirty odd other bottles of beer, wines bought in France and other odds and sods.

Averaged 52.8 mph (a few miles of rural road in Belgium including a bit of [virtually] single track on way to St Sixtus Abbey for Westvleteren beer) and 63.7 mpg (according to OBC) which was fairly pleasing.

Filled up on Sunday evening to the brim and then drove from the West Midlands to Sunderland on Monday morning returning last night, totalling 450 miles dead - with a little in there to my hotel and back. The needle is smack between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark, showing ~250 miles till empty.

I drove mostly in 'Eco mode' and averaging (speed) around 70 heading North due to traffic, but 80+ way back.
