I wouldnt get myself in a twist over xdrive. In the wet i. pretty sure i could floor this and the electronics would scoop it up, though i tend to drive appropriate for the conditions. In the snow and ice winters are your friend, much more than xdrive on summers, though i work from home in bad weather

Each to their own and whatnot, but that fact that, in the UK, it is s-drive only never once entered my head as a consideration when I got my 340....

I had the option of xDrive on my 30d but chose sDrive with no regrets. My 340i has a smoother torque build up than my previous 330d, and feels like it will be easier to drive in adverse conditions. The characteristics of a turbo petrol seem even better suited to sDrive than my diesels have been. Just so smooth... The 340i has a better turn in than any xDrive (unmodified) that I have driven. Why BMW have to put SUV suspension on all xDrive cars is beyond me. I'm not a modifier, so this puts me off... Should a next iteration M340i come with xDrive and suitable chassis tweaks, this may be a different proposition... However, a M340ix may have ridiculous 0-62 times compared to the M3... My 340i sDrive already seems much quicker above 40mph than any other car I've tried. But, smooth and hides its pace well... At road legal speeds xDrive lets you drive very quickly... But, seems to take some of the soul out of a car. As others have commented, the 40i engined cars are very easy to make an emotional bond with...

When I first moved from the 335D to the 440i, I was worried about losing the XD and was a bit careful at first. Now after 7500 miles, I am completely used to RWD again and it feels just as safe.
As for mpg, I'm on 30.4 mpg. Best I've had on a run is about 47 but you need a slow motorway for that. |
