Very glad to hear the F31 is coming. If the proportions come out anthing close to the F11, it will look awesome. F31 M-Sport, 6MT, in Estoril please.
I think the concesus at this point in time is that BMW is only going to sell the Active Hybrid 3 series here as their fuel efficient model, since the US is more infatuated with hybrids than diesels. I think the best chance to see a 4cyl diesel in the US is the X1 which is supposed to debut later in the year with the LCI(refresh).

I assume this includes Canada? Since this comes from the BMW North America Manager?

M550d
That M550d won't show up here is a huge shame. I wish someone from BMWNA would come here and explain why the most desirable D's are withheld from US consumption.
Meanwhile their "activehybrids" are available in both the 5 and 7 series. |

I'd be perfectly happy with a 6MT M-sport F31. How awesome of a DD would that be?! |

Next they should bring us the F20 and F21. At least give it to Canada where the fuel is roughly 1.5 times as much as in the US. There are a lot of people that would like to have a premium hot-hatch on this side of the pond. After all, Canada was given the X1 well before the US and it's been a very hot seller so far.

i'm glad and disappointed that they are not getting rid of the wagon; however, that thing needs to have F/I.
SOB, when is BMW going to be a big baller on the V8 Diesel? |

The ActiveHybrid, on the other hand, plays to a prominent industry trend. BMW will sell a lot more of those, even if they aren't nearly as compelling as enthusiast cars. So those are the choices they make. I'm bummed that's the way it has to be.

We have to remember that the X1 is coming late this year as well (assuming they don't delay it yet again) so the base price of the X3 may very well swell a bit to make room. Also, just as they raised the price of the 528i when it swtiched from N52 to N20, do not be surprised if they take the same opportunity with the X3. So, having said all that, and given this: 2012 F30 328i $34,600 2012 F25 X3 28i $36,850 I would expect something like this: 2013 E84 X1 28i ~$32,000 2013 F30 328i $34,600 2013 F31 328i ~$36,500 2013 F25 X3 28i ~$38,250 Of course, if it does go like this, once you add AWD to the F31, it will be close to the X3 MSRP anyway. |

I know SCOTT26 says the X1 is coming, but I don't know if we can wait another 8-9 months. March intro would be OK. F31 is nice because my wife really wants an excuse for another ED trip (yep, she's cool), and F25 is my favorite. But F25 28i loaded with options is $20K more than a CR-V. Honestly my wife thinks a new CR-V and a F25 28i are equivalent in virtually all respects. |

We recently went through the same sort of process/analysis and ended up with the Jetta TDI wagon. It's been great so far. Though, I suspect we may have ended up in a E91 320d or X1 20d if they were available stateside.
Regarding ED, I think the X1 should be available through that program just as the F31 will, since it is manufactured in Europe (unlike other BMW SAVs built for US consumption). Quote:

Yeah, we were kinda thinking that too... she saw plenty on ED a few months back and liked it. But then part of me started thinking they'd move production to Spartanburg when it goes on sale here. Spartanburg seems a full capacity right now, so I'm not sure where I came up with that theory. |

If considering a VW TDI, don't forget to consider maintenance expenses for the stupid timing belt. I really considered a Golf TDI as a daily driver until I factored in the extra cost of diesel (in the US) and the ridiculous cost of replacing that belt every 40-60k miles. It makes the GTI look like a better deal since they had the common sense to use a timing chain on it.

I'll gladly trade sideways from my E90 335i sport to an F31 N20 (in whatever 'sport' version it would come with) for the extra cargo room. And I might even consider an automatic assuming it would be available with the flappy paddles and had a 'sport' mode for those 8 gears. I would love to wear out the 8 to 3 kick-down. Side note: Drove an Acura TSX wagon and was pleasantly surprised. More panache than expected. Not in the same league of course, but interesting to see what you can get for the money.

Did you see the 2013 Acura RDX that was just announced? It's a step closer to an X3 than the current RDX.
