Yep. It’s not like I’m killing my plugs by doing what they were made to do—idle.

Just loft off the brake slightly before it turns green and you’ll be ready to go. Not too difficult of a habit to form.

Obviously is varies based on fuel efficiency, but in general I believe if you’re stopped for 7 seconds for more it’s beneficial. I seem to recalled reading some study about that at one point.

Hate it. Never use it. Fortunately the 2018 came from the factory remembering the last setting, so mine is always off. Even if that wasn’t the case I drive in sport mode 100% of the time, so it would still always be off.

Wow! Sport mode all the time sounds crazy to me! Every time I drive for a while in sport my fuel economy plummets like crazy because of the sensitive throttle, so I just stay in comfort usually. How many mpgs do u get in normal driving in sport? Also which 2018 3 series model do you have?

I average about 18 in nonstop Chicago stop and go traffic, with no freeway or highway driving at all. I have a 340i M Sport rwd.

It is also important to note that Auto Start Stop does not completely turn off the engine, it actually pauses it and resumes from where you left off.

That is why you will notice that startups are much faster than usual.

Not bad tbh. I get about the same in Sport on my 335i M Sport but I guess I like getting 24-25 in Comfort 😊

It's not just the sensitive throttle, it's because in Sport you're running one gear lower. Cruising at 2k RPM is going to use a lot more gas than cruising at 1.6k RPM.

Under those conditions it makes very little difference what mode you're in.

I seriously doubt you’d be able to get 24-25 in the kind of nonstop stop and go traffic I drive in in Chicago.

edit: just a little extra fyi - my average speed recorded by my car is 15 mph.

I still average about 32 mpg with straight highway cruising at around 80 mph. I only have my sport mode set for chassis, not motor and transmission. I do it for the steering. The main reason I don’t have the motor and transmission set is because of the transmission shifting. In sport the transmission bogs too much at low speed.

Fair point. Here in Metro Atlanta where I am usually not too much traffic when I am out and about so it isn’t too bad. But for sure, when it’s stop and go traffic mpg drops much lower.

Also, your second point about having Sport set to chassis only—I made a similar thread about that earlier. Basicaly, I was trying to figure out if there was a way to get open exhaust valves in Sport with only chassis selected. Because for me atleast, when you select chassis only, even though I’ve selected open valves in Sport on BM3, it still keeps the valves closed. I’d be driving in sport much more if there was a way to make that happen.

I'm always in Sport/Sport+ and get 20-21 mpg driving in the city. I believe I get 28-30 mpg on the highway (it's been a while since I monitored it).

Do you drive in Chassis & Drivetrain or just Chassis only?

Chassis and drivetrain! Gotta let that blissful MPPSK do its thing! I love the mild burbles at lower RPMs.

You're the exception to the rule. I'd venture that +90% of those who use Sport do it for the quicker acceleration. That's what I use it for, when I'm in a passing or merging situation. Otherwise the acceleration I get in Comfort is all I need.

You’ll probably agree, I’m the exception to most rules.

Yeah I didn't get a B58 with MPPSK for good gas mileage lol personally speaking at least. Using Sport/+ mode all the time is a lot of fun.

Auto stop start does not exist for fuel economy. Idle fuel consumption is very very little. Auto stop start exists because more than half of a vehicles life is spent idling at stop lights. It is an emissions component. Not a fuel saving component.

I have kept the Auto Start/Stop off since I bought the car new. To be more user-friendly, the system should recognize and not shut off the engine at stop signs.
