The opposite: it saves fuel by keeping the car from burning it while idling. Edmunds tested it with an F34 328 GT and got like 9% better fuel economy.

Read the fine print: All three of our test subjects delivered the estimated 10 percent in city traffic. If you don't drive in city traffic the savings will be far lower.

To be more user-friendly, the system should recognize and not shut off the engine at stop signs.
Shutting it off at stop signs is the whole point of the system. It doesn't know how long you'll have to sit there before you can go, nor does it know how long you'll sit at a red light before it turns green. That would require further engineering by the likes of The Amazing Kreskin.

I’m in the suburbs, and most if the time I can proceed immediately after stopping at a stop sign. I dislike having the engine shut off and restart for a second. I don’t do rolling stops, and don’t want to gently ease on the brakes to prevent AS/S from engaging. BMW has plenty of Kreskins in Munich.

Based on your usual driving conditions you shouldn't use it. That point has been made numerous times in this thread, starting with post #2.

Actually, if they added added a user-defined delay before the AS/S engages, it would be more practical for me. I would set it for one or two seconds. This way, I could stop at a stop sign and then proceed.

Something you can control with your left foot perhaps? If only there was a solution??

What are you talking about??? Your comment makes no sense. I hope your comment doesn’t indicate you are a left foot braker. That’s a whole issue unto itself.

But now as I've settled into the car more, it feels like the engineers really thought the feature out and it's starting to become more useful, especially in backed-up bumper to bumper traffic on my commute. I find myself turning it on sometimes when I see traffic ahead and it helps my fuel economy and peace of mind that im not wasting fuel idling in traffic.

What do you think about AS/S and do you think it comes in handy when needed?
I stopped using it about a year after I bought my F32. Living in the humid SE US the system made the cabin too uncomfortable. Especially in the summer months. Sure there are duel savings but I couldn't care less if I'm sweating my ass off.

BMW could have been a leader by designing a heat pump which operated off a larger battery.

So many people driving around Atlanta pooking at their phones. Drives me nuts. Although I work from home these days I would see some crazy stuff on 285

So dangerous… just this week I almost had someone run into me while merging off an on ramp because, *drum roll*, they were staring straight down at their phone 🤦🏾‍♂️

Until I moved my dad to Chicago almost two years ago and started driving almost every day to visit him in his senior living center I mostly only drove in Chicago when it suited me. I live across the street from an “L” stop and I took the train more than 90% of the time. Since I’ve started driving across Chicagoland the last two years I have honked my horn at people staring at their phone and not moving from traffic lights more than I had in all of my previous 45 years of driving. I used to give a quick honk to get their attention. Not anymore. I’m sick of it. I honk until they start moving.

How about we make using handheld phones while driving illegal? Oh, yeah, right...we did. No law can fix stupid.

It is, but if every time a traffic cop saw someone holding their phone to their ear while driving they stopped them the word would start to spread. In Chicagoland there are virtually zero traffic cops. As with many things that are unique here with a metro population of roughly nine million I rarely see traffic stops. Way, way fewer than any other place I’ve lived.

I think texting while driving is a bigger issue than on a voice call. I could be wrong though. I love that our cars support hands free calling it makes it so much easier and safer if you get a random call. But yeah it's hard to enforce especially people texting while driving since it's fairly easy to hide that you're texting since their phone is out of sight.

Sorry it wasn't clear. It was a joke about manuals not having the problem of premature shut down with auto start/stop.

Just a "you'd know if you had a manual thing" maybe.

Ah, that makes sense!! Now I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t think about a manual and a clutch. I’m so used to seeing left foot brakers around here driving around with their brake lights lit 100% of the time.

In The Netherlands this is a traffic offense which is actively pursued. The police uses coach buses with human surveillants peaking into every car on highways and registering every driver they see holding their phone in hand as well as portable smart cameras on overpasses that use AI to recognize violations.
The penalty is 350 euros plus 9 euros "admin fee". They don't need to stop you. You just get the fine by mail.

And driving on I94 is like a racetrack. State police aren’t out there like they used to be. I lived in IL for the last 3 years for my final job in the Navy and commuted to Evanston and the South Side a lot. It was crazy driving on the intestate. I’m doing 80 and being passed like I’m standing still.

I’m now back in VA and the state police are much more prevalent so driving on I64 is a bit more tame even though the same issue of people texting and driving seems to be everywhere.

“Let’s be careful out there!”

I'd like to see some data on the effect of auto start stop on N55 rod bearings. It seems to me that dramatically increasing the amount of zero oil pressure startups is a very, very bad idea.

If it was a problem we'd be seeing reports of it here in droves. It takes a lot longer than the usual time spent sitting at a stop light for the bearings, or anything else, to go dry.
