Here's how I rationalize it. Technology is changing at such a fast pace now, yes, however the last tech change to iDrive was in 2008. I plan on keeping my car for 4-5 years, which would mean that by its last year, my iDrive system would be close to 10 years old. A LOT will have changed in that time frame from a tech perspective.

Also, given that Apple has been working w/ BMW integration (via Siri) and new inclusions via OS6, you can rest assured that all significant capability integration and third party support will require the NEW idrive system (there's very little reason to implement new technology into old systems, as there's no incremental revenue incentive to do so. However, you can be sure there will continue to be new releases and advancements to the new iDrive system over the next few years to keep the tech "fresh".

I can't rationalize not waiting 4 months to get a car that will be better suited for technological support for years to come vs. buying a car that is essentially obselete from a tech perspective. Yes, iDrive is pretty snazzy as it is, but we don't know what's coming, and I know that the next "cool" integration that comes down the pipe will require the new platform (take "Nuance" for example).

I say to each their own. I'm buying this car for the performace, but I also like my tech. For that reason - I'm waiting.

If you're one that tends to keep up with the latest technology, you might want to lease form now on so you can switch out to newer technology every 3 years. I just got hip to that as I started finding out just how much BMW changes things. This will be my first, but not my last, lease car.

BMW only has enough surplus old-nav systems to last thru November, so that's an invalid question

I understand your experience and knowledge from the IT realm, but trying to justify this in a system integration testing setback is really, really silly. You should know better than that, this is primarily a hardware change. So you're saying they were able to test the hardware in the 5 series, 7 series, and another 3 series (the same car) but not 2 of the other versions of one of the models that's getting the change.

Hah. I don't think so.

BMW is really good at making money. Saving it plays a big role in this.

I would sum it up to be a very poor marketing & visibility change for those affected (a handful of people who don't matter so much in the big picture). Sure, it dilutes the credibility BMW has earned to a handful of enthusiasts. Shrug.

No, Im sure they saved enough extra supply to replace our 12's and first 3 months 13's with the old system for when they break under warranty! Wouldnt want to have to swap to the new system after all! It might increase cost by .0001%

I'm about as tech-savvy a person as you'll ever meet and I'm taking delivery of my F30 as planned in August. Reasons why:

1. I've had voice command capability in every car
I've owned since 2003 and I never use it. Turns out I don't need to talk to my car as hitting buttons is simply faster.

2. I don't need to text or email while I'm driving. That's why I have a telephone connected to Bluetooth. Turns out I use my voice to speak to people, not to speak to my air conditioner.

3. Navigation is important to me and the BMW nav is best-in-class as it is. They're not adding new streets where I travel and the resolution is fantastic.

4. The innovation that's coming is all app-side, not hardware-side. The more integrated and complex the in-car systems get the more closed they become. BMW is not interested in giving Apple an open door to their automotive OS.

5. Within a year I can get the new combox anyway, upgrade if there's really something that significant.

Nuance's Dragon Drive! Messaging Available in 2012 BMW 7 and 3 Series Vehicles

BMW is the First Auto Manufacturer to Integrate Dragon Drive! Messaging, Enabling a Smarter, More Intuitive Way to Send and Receive Emails and Text Messages behind the Wheel

BURLINGTON, Mass., Jul 09, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nuance Communications Inc. NUAN -0.79% today announced that BMW will be making Dragon Drive! Messaging available in the new 2012 BMW 7 Series, BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid vehicles, with additional models to follow. Dragon Drive! Messaging is a new BMW ConnectedDrive feature as part of the latest generation of BMW Navigation system Professional. Unveiled in May, Dragon Drive! Messaging is Nuance's new automotive-grade connected car service that lets people speak emails and text messages.

The 2012 BMW 7 Series will be the first car ever to feature Dragon Drive! Messaging, hitting the market in July 2012, with the BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid following later this year. Dragon Drive! Messaging delivers a fully-integrated mobile assistant messaging experience that lets drivers speak, listen, edit and respond to text messages and emails - keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Drivers can speak simple commands to format e-mails by adding new lines, paragraphs, and speaking punctuation and other format commands.

"People want to connect with family, friends, and colleagues while they're on the road, but without the dangerous distractions posed by manually engaging handheld devices," said Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, automotive, Nuance. "By integrating Dragon Drive! Messaging into the car itself, BMW and Nuance are delivering a smarter, safer way to communicate."

Dragon Drive! Messaging is available as part of Nuance's Dragon Drive! highly-specialized hybrid automotive-grade platform that fully harnesses Nuance's deep experience and research in connected and embedded natural language understanding voice technologies. Drivers can interact naturally with their car, minimizing manual and visual distractions.

In addition to the dictation functionality, the new BMW Navigation system Professional also features natural command and control for almost all functions, powered by Nuance. Drivers can quickly and easily speak one-shot commands for phone calls and navigation, such as "Call John Miller on Mobile" or "Navigate to 100 Boylston Street in Boston, Massachusetts."

Availability

Dragon Drive! Messaging will be available in BMW vehicles starting in July 2012 in six different languages, including US and UK English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. BMW buyers can test Dragon Drive! Messaging for free for 60 days. Once the trial period expires, Dragon Drive! Messaging will be available as a Nuance service with annual renewal option. To learn more about Dragon Drive! Messaging for BMW, visit www.nuance.com/bmw . To find a list of compatible devices for BMW ConnectedDrive supporting Dragon Drive! Messaging, visit www.bmw.com/bluetooth .

Dragon Drive! is a part of Nuance's broad Dragon portfolio, including Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Dragon Dictation, Dragon Go!, Dragon TV and Dragon ID, all humanizing the way people engage their phones, tablets, TVs, cars and computers - just by using their voice.
