Unhappy iPhone 5 "Not Supported" Error

When I plug in my iPhone 5 using a USB/Lightning cable, I get this Not Supported message.

Has anyone been able to connect iPhone 5 via USB?

Btw, iPhone BT connectivity working fine.

No, I don't have these. However, USB/iPhone connectivity is supposed to be standard.

I do have:
S6NHA Hands-free with USB interface

I think BMW released a software update for IDrive a few days back to add iPhone 5 compatibility. There should be a thread around here somewhere.

You need a Y-Cable to get any iPhone with the S6NHA to work.

I'll have to wait for the Lightning adapter to be available before I can use the Y-Cable.

Looks like it - maybe some third-party manufacturer will produce a lightning y-cable soon, than you could skip the adapter.

The explanation I got when I placed my order was that the extended USB functionality for music connection with smartphones (6NF) was needed to get full connectivity with the iPhone. That was directly from the sales rep here in Sweden.

Indeed. You need the Telephone USB Interface to plug the phone in as you describe. Just use Bluetooth for now.

Also, the lightning connector has rendered the BMW integration useless. Actually, it's rendered the iPhone 5 useless

There really seems to be mass confusion over what works and what doesn't. There are numerous posts describing the iPhone 5 working fine with the supplied (Apple) cable. For example:

Quote:
The iPhone 5 seems to function better than my 4s in several areas.
Obviously the docking tray no longer works, but the new Lightning to USB cables functions perfectly. Pandora, Music all work as before.

Bluetooth seems to function better, specifically the Office functions finally are working, both text and email. They are both still contained in the Text section, but they now load instantly which they never did on the 4s (w/ iOS 6).

It will only display the first few lines while driving, but the voice will read the entire email or text. The main improvement is speed, they load as soon as they appear on the iPhone.

Siri also works via bluetooth audio.

Overall the transition to the Lightning cable hasnt seem to have affected newer vehicles, at least the BMW models with latest Combox.

All the fear, uncertainty, and doubt around here. I've already posted in various other threads about this, but if you buy either of the Lightning adapters, everything will work EXCEPT video playback and iPod Out, aka PlugIn, which is the native iPod video interface that you can put up on iDrive. But both of those features require that you have BMW Apps and the Media cradle.

Hey SD330i, I just picked up my car this past week. You already know that from my delivery thread Anyway, just wanted to chime in on my experience. First off the iPhone 5 integration with BMW is just flawless. There are a few things that you need keep in mind. On your iPhone, make sure you setup notifications to appear on lock screen for text messages. I believe the messages feature is still not working (At least I havent figured it out yet). This is for the text messages to pop up on the screen. Also download the connected drive app and start it before plugging in the phone to ensure 100% connectivity. I have seen where it looses connectivity if its not started prior to connecting the usb. ipod features just work out of the box once setup this way. Office features import your phone book into the car and the Bluetooth integration is dynamic. Meaning if you update a contact. add or delete, the change reflects once you start up the car. BMW + Apple is a good marriage (integration-wise).
Sorry for the length and the quotes, but all in all it appears that the iPhone 5 DOES integrate with newer BMWs, so success or failure must depend on which options you have. I would guess that one or both of the two options I mentioned may have something to do with it....?

And if, like most people with an iPhone, you ordered Apps and a Cradle for maximum compatibility then the iPhone 5 is redundant. Also ... lightning? USB2? Are you sure? Lightning? Should be called Candle or something. Thunderbolt was a genuine technological breakthrough. Lightning is an absolute con. It's no surprise that sales of Apple goodies have fallen over the last few years and so they've made a smaller but worse adapter that forces lots of people to buy more goodies without getting ANY benefit other than ... wait for it ... you can put the wire in upside down I suppose Jobs was in the process of dying when he signed it off though so at least there's an excuse why it's crap.

Hmm. Lightning is a con, eh? If improving upon a 10 year old connector by making the new one 1/3 the size, much smoother and uni directional is a con, then I suppose you also find the F30 to be a con. Silly BMW, changed the looks a little, took 2 cylinders away and bumped up the price

Anyone get their iPhone 5 to work without the Tech Package. I have only S6NHA.

When you've finished attacking your own straw man ...

You have clearly been conned. What's lightning about it? Have you seriously listened to yourself? Have you heard those "plus points"? It's smaller and the cable goes in easier. Whoopee. Who gives a fuck? It does less. It's a backwards step. It's ten year old technology (USB2), doesn't carry analogue audio or video without buying new accessories and requires the purchase of a whole bunch of adapters for your old accessories, some of which still won't work anyway. And it doesn't work properly in a BMW

The answer is "no".

You need the "Y" cable from BMW which is a problem because it doesn't exist yet. Apple is releasing a $30 adapter to convert the old dock connector into Lightning but its unclear if snapping that onto the existing Y cable will make it work.

I'm sure you have a beater iPod lying around the house. Buy this old cable, use the old iPod, wait a few weeks to see what others say about compatibility.

You were advised to get the Tech Package for iPhone integration, digital speed limit, etc. back when you asked these same questions prior to placing your order.

I think the main point from Apple's point of view of the new connector is exactly that it is smaller. This frees up (very) valuable space for other components and possibly the thinner design. So while it may cause us some trouble, I think they did it because it was necessary not just to mess with us.

It's smaller, it's faster, you can move much more data through it which is essential in the future, and it's proprietary. That's all Apple needed it to be.

You obviously don't have the iphone 5 or you would not try to discredit the very valid benefits I listed. You probably have an android photo. Yuck

Yes, it's lame that it doesnt work with the bmw. I'm pretty sure a software update will fix that.

Beater ipod doesn't help cuz I like to stream audio through rdio

Sorry, I'm too poor to be able to afford the Tech Package. I'm coming from a Cooper S, so the 328i is a big step up for me. My next one will be a Z4 or SLK or maybe even Boxter. I'll be sure to load it up with tech then.
