Well, if you take a great car like the F30 and want to make it better the only real thing BMW can do is make it look better. And if you already have a lower/wider/sportier car that's more exclusive in the F32 then it makes sense to add two more doors to it and there you go, a hotter alternative to the gazillion 3 Series Sedans on the road especially since it just went CPO in huge numbers.

The 6 Series Gran Coupe has been following this strategy successfully for 5 years, no one can confuse a 6 Series Gran Coupe with a 5 Series Sedan, it looks spot-on to the 6 Series Coupe, different customer, different price range, different car.
Point you continue to miss is that the 6GC actually IS a completely different car than the 5, unlike the 4GC/F30/F32.

6GC:
Measurements
Width: 74.6 in.
Height: 54.8 in.
Length: 197.2 in.
Ground clearance: 5.0 in.
Front track: 63.0 in.
Rear track: 65.6 in.

5:
Measurements
Width: 73.2 in.
Height: 57.6 in.
Length: 193.4 in.
Ground clearance: 5.6 in.
Front track: 63.0 in.
Rear track: 64.1 in.

Now the F3x's:
3:
Measurements
Width: 71.3 in.
Height: 56.3 in.
Length: 182.5 in.
Front track: 60.3 in.
Rear track: 61.9 in.
Wheel base: 110.6 in.
Cargo capacity, all seats in place: 13.0 cu.ft.

4GC:
Measurements
Width: 71.9 in.
Height: 54.7 in.
Length: 182.6 in.
Ground clearance: 5.1 in.
Front track: 60.8 in.
Rear track: 62.8 in.
Wheel base: 110.6 in.
Cargo capacity, all seats in place: 14.0 cu.ft.

I know, I know, it LOOKS wider, right? The 6 is wide. The 3 AND 4 are skinny and short. And that's fine (preferred even) with most people that don't want a big car, and aren't inclined to pretend a mid size car is anything but....
So the GC has more trunk space than the F30? Interesting. I thought it just seemed more useful because of the easier access through the hatch.

Also must say it's really nice I've never had to slam shut the hatch on my GC, hated doing that on the F30.

In your post I believe you showed the 435 M-sport, which is the highest model, along with lower lines of the other models. Unfair physical comparison, obviously to further flatter your favorite model the 4GC.
Wasn't intentional, really was posted just to show the body lines of all three versions, point being the X4 and the GT are large/tall hybrid SUV's whereas the GC is a low/wide hybrid Coupe/Sedan.

The reason? I swear that half the time I read these types of threads that people don't realize there are three different cars. I think they read "hatchback" and immediately assume that the F36 is the GT and that "GC" is a spelling error.

The foot-swipe to close the liftgate is one of my favorite GC features.

You've just done the weekly family grocery shopping, there are 6 bags left, you can make it from the garage to the kitchen in one trip but with the hands full of heavy bags you can't slam the trunk shut. Swipe of the foot, problem solved. Gran Coupe will save me 30 miles a year of walking between my car and the refrigerator, huge win.

I grant you that the 6 is a more different car than the 5, but that said the 4 is different enough from the 3 to be noticeable and not confuse the two.

Either way, can't we just leave this thread with direction to the OP that goes something like this?

X3 if you want biggest cargo potential.
X4 if you want a unique shape to go with your cargo potential.
GT if you have a dog.
3 Wagon if you want a Sedan-like cargo experience.
3 Sedan if you have a family of 5 and want anonymity.
4 Coupe if you are young and going for the trophy wife.
4 Gran Coupe if you've done your time in minivan purgatory and want exclusivity.

I think that sums it all up, no?

Well, no.. But we can agree no one is going to change your mind.

Also, family of 5 in. 3 series? Must be a short and thin family

+1, even the 3GT is more exclusive and rare and expensive than the 4GC.

Someone explain to me what is "not for me" about the way a rear end opens, considering that when it is shut there is no look or feeling of a hatchback from the inside or out.

Casually sitting inside the 4GC, there is virtually no way of detecting it is a hatchback. A glance at the exterior also gives you no indication that it is a hatchback.

You're just getting a surprise of convenience.

But that's the third-best part of the Gran Coupe. It has a functional liftgate but it looks like a normal trunk. It's disguised, it only exists because if it were a standard trunk it would be too narrow to put a carryon or a set of golf clubs.

No one gets a GC because of its liftgate. It's a happy accident, a surprise that makes you say "cool". It's not a "hatchback". It's the lowest and widest and sleekest four-door BMW makes under $60,000. It's an F30 chopped and flared. It's an F32 with two doors cut in the sheetmetal.

It's the ultimate of the Ultimate Driving Machines.

Great minds think alike.

I seriously think half the people here have never seen a Gran Coupe in real life or confuse the GT with the GC. Either that, or like the petty "the F30 has cheaper interior materials!" argument that went on for years the GC haters are looking for some nitpick. All it takes is one look at the Gran Coupe to know what's what, anyone who hates on the GC has taken an indefensible position. We know people who spend $10,000 to try to make their E90's or F30's look like an F36 comes stock from the factory, time for everyone to get real.

Oops. I think you're right. LOL.

Well, let's all take a break from this intense discussion and watch a great video instead. It has an awesome trunk, don't you think?

If it was large enough to serve my needs that's exactly why I would have gotten one, as opposed to a coupe or 328. With a trunk lid you're limited to carrying only what will fit through the opening, irrespective of the size of the trunk. But I didn't get one because it's just too small. Looks aren't everything.

I have seen many posters in multiple threads make the "not for me" comment in regards to the GC hatch. It just doesn't make sense to me.

The hidden hatch is a major selling point for me. It doesn't look like a hatch but makes loading equipment or the occasional unfortunate trip to ikea much easier.

Can you get either a mountain bike or a large dog comfortably (so it can sit up)in the back of a GC ?

Actually the hatch would be a major reason I would get the 4GC over the 3, besides looking more aggressive and sleaker. The main reason I got the Sport Wagon(at the time the 4GC wasn't out yet) is the practicality of being able to flop down my golf clubs and pushcart in the back, as well as things like bags of mulch or soil or bulky items like this from big box stores. I hate having to navigate the narrow opening of a trunk with these things. I also happen to like the wagon look over the sedan.

If the 4GC was out at this time last year I wouldve gone that way because of the "HATCH". Yes I said it. Hatch

Joe, I don't think clubs fit unless you put seat down. Definitely not sideways. Takes it out of my driveway.
