My 3 yr old 428gc just got a check engine light today and last year I had the same thing when the temp was very cold. Is weird both times the CEL came during very cold temps. Last year dealer said it was thermostat.

Just checking here to see if its a common problem in freezing temps

Both times with the CEL I also noticed ther temp gauge didnt go up (45 minute drive)

im also in Mass, so same temp. no CEL's from my car with this insane weather we're having. if your temp gage doesnt move within 45 mins i would think your thermostat might be stuck open. this morning in the -5 F weather my temp gage started to move within 15-20 mins of driving

If you can read the code and find P0597, its clearly a failed open thermostat. I did quite a bit of search and found many complaints of thermostat failure. I even disconnected the temp sensor due to fluctuating readings.
Your warranty covers that and even if expired, my SA said BMW have exyended warranty as its known defect for certain years.

Picked up my car and they mention replacing the water pump and thermostat. Finally after driving for 20 mins the temp gauge starts to move.

Was your car over heating like past 120 or it took awhile to get the car temp to normal ?

When the thermostat is stuck open it takes the car longer to warm up. It isn't caused by cold weather, you just notice it cold weather because the heat doesn't come up as fast as usual. You can drive forever in warm temperatures and never know the difference.
