We have the advantage of being surrounded by water and being a bazillion miles from anyone. THis makes it very hard to get illicit goods into the country, not impossible but very very difficult.

Even something as simple as a piece of fruit will set you pack $10,000 if you forget it in your bag on the way into the country. Not sure how you'd forget with the 8,000 signs in massive bold type saying you need to declare everything or face a $10,000 fine ... but idiots still try and go through the fast lane.

I arrived in sydney once and the little sniffer dog made a bee line for me and sat near me. I knew that wasn't good.
