Help with Comfort Access: 2nd Touch to unlock does not unlock all doors?

I'd really appreciate a confirmation to see whether I have a malfunction in my Comfort Access feature, or whether I am misunderstanding something.

In my Idrive settings, under Door locks-> Unlock Button, I have it set to "Driver's door only".

If when the car is locked, I touch the inner part of the external door handle, the driver's side door unlocks as expected. However, if I touch it again, the other doors do not unlock. I can unlock the other doors by using the button on the center console, or by using the CA on the passenger side door.

Of course, if I set the Idrive setting to unlock "All doors", it works as expected.

However, I'd like to know if other folks are able to use the "Driver's door only" setting, and unlock the driver's door first, and then the other doors with a 2nd touch?

Thanks in advance!

I asked this question before since it's a common feature on most other cars with keyless entry. As far as I know, the answer is no. I just set it to unlock all and left it as is. If someone jumps in the passenger seat and murders me I'm SOL.

Wouldn't be so bad if they put an unlock switch on the drivers door, at least then you could unlock the other doors without getting in the car.

That is one of those German oversights that makes me want to yell at their engineers.

Thanks for the reply, and sharing your experience. The strange thing is that if you use the key fob, and press unlock a second time, the car will unlock all the passenger doors. I'm surprised that the CA doesn't work the same way. I guess I'll set the Idrive to unlock all the doors at once and take my chances.

Never really got the point of this 'unlock driver's door only'. If someone is crazy enough to jump in your car while you're getting in wouldn't they just do it from the driver's door?

In my 550 I just pull the left passenger handle if I need all doors to unlock. If it is just me I pull the driver door handle. Both handles are within arm reach.

I guess they are different CA systems. In series 5 you can open or close all doors from any doors. Setting the system to "Driver door only" allows the choice as stated above.

Mini 5 series means we get 1/2 the standard features

This is a nuisance. A small one, granted... but sometimes it's the little things in life. Which is why, I admit, Comfort Access was a big reason I bought the Premium Package. I'm used to having automatic unlock/lock and knew I would miss it.

But the setup in the 3-series is lacking. You should be able to touch the rear doors (ok, it would cost more to implement -- I'll give 'em that) to open them. At least add the ability to touch the driver's door twice to unlock all the doors. And I can't get used to the unlock being in the middle of the car instead of on the driver's armrest.

I think most BMW's are like that. My old Z4 had it in the center console.

I think it's a matter of striking a balance between options, usability and not over-engineering the car.

In terms of usability, the efficiency provided by CA falls apart if you have to touch the car twice to get it.

I wouldn't agree with that. My wifes Nissan is 1 push for the drivers door, 2 for all the doors. It's not capacitive so it's easier to just quickly double tap the button.

That's also the standard I've seen on most of the new cars that I've rented from Chevy/Ford.

I don't have a real issue with it, but the wife thinks someones always going to pop out and car jack her.

IMO if its such a "nuisance" I would trade it in for another make car that would make you happy.
cheers

Say Vern... so if I don't like every little thing about the car, I should just go trade it in? (or at least I shouldn't bring it up in a thread about it)

What excellent advice!

if you have your passengar grab the passenger side door handle, all doors will unlock. OR, just touch the pass. side button before going to drivers side

Weird, but, it works.

I noticed that too. Was fine when I open the door for my wife when are out in my car, but when I pick up the dry cleaning, was a pain that only the driver's door unlocks. So I set the car to open all doors rather than just the driver door. Minor thing.

As well as perceived tradition. BMW buyers are a conservative bunch, a conservatism to which BMW actively caters.

It is fascinating to witness the howls of protest when BMW makes a small change, be it styling or function.

The trick seems to be to pretend the irrational aspects of these cars equal personality.

If you touch the CA twice how would the car know the difference between locking and unlocking?

Then we'd see a thread "Comfort Access Unlocking All Doors When I just want to Lock the Vehicle"

You touch a different part of the handle (above the key hole to lock it).

It's just a criticism of the CA design -- if there's the slight chance that BMW engineers look at forums like this for feedback. But you've wasted 2 of your first 8 posts on this forum criticizing... me, and quite rudely. I'll never stop being amazed at how people will talk to others behind the anonymity of the Internet.

"Cheers"
