Debadged & paint is horrible
Alright guys so first of all I have a 2013 CPO 335ix. I bought it in 2016 around March.
Recently I decided to debadge the xdrive and 335i emblem on the rear of the car. Before I rebadged it I noticed that the paint around the badges were kind of weird. It dipped in very deeply and looked like there was no clear coat where the badges were...weird. So after debadging with the blow dryer, fishing wire, and goo gone method. I was left with two areas were the paint dipped down and there was no clear coat! Also the paint color was different I applied some clear coat but it looks very uneven. So what did the previous owner do??? I don't think the badges would come from the factory like that. Also what can I do to make it looks better... Sand it down?

The paint is a different shade because it hasn't been exposed to the elements until you removed the badges. You probably shouldn't have put on the clearcoat. A little hasty. Especially hand painting it. Did you try buffing it out first??

I tried using clay bar on the area. But the paint was also flaking, that's one reason why I just decided to clear coat it.

If you're going to de-badge you must do it when the car is fairly new. The longer the badges are in place the more the adhesive bonds with and becomes a part of the clear coat. The paint color will also change with exposure to UV, except where the badges are.
That mess can be salvaged, but only by a pro or very experienced amateur. |

I'd consider myself an amateur, might have to find a pro to help fix my mess.

I debadged mine five years later. There was a shadow and clear scratches in the clear coat around where the emblem used to be. A detailer was able to get that off easily. Charged me 40 bucks.

Hmmm my cars just as old as yours and removing the badges worked flawlessly. I started with spraying goo gone over them, they sat for 5 mins and I literally peeled them right off using dental floss...
If you want the debadged look you can easily get a good body shop to clean and repaint that for you. My shop would likely charge $150cdn-$200cdn for the work... OR Stick the badges back on!

I debadged my car 6 months ago and it is a 2013 (built in 2012-7).
Plus it has survived Swedish weather (winter + roadsalt). After some polishing it is not possible to notice there has been badges there. Maybe previous owner repainted the trunk or something? |

Ok so here's what I'd suggest. A pro can use a solvent and clean up your clear coat gone awry. Will take under 5 mins. From there your options are re-clear the whole trunk professionally or hit it with some buffing compound and a white wax made specifically for white cars. Then a couple of coats of high gloss wax and it should be ok.
Other option - which I'd probably go with - is have the clear removed as described above and reinstall the badges. Definitely path of least resistance. Maybe go with some black ones from IND to change it up a bit.

I agree though, debadging should be done sooner rather than later in your cars life, if that's what you want to do. No clue why that happened to the OPs car though. Looks a bit of a nightmare to me to fix up again other than rebadging to cover that up. |

Pure speculation on my part, but the only reason I can think of that OP had such a drastic change in paint depth at the badges is that the rear had been resprayed at some point. What I'm thinking is that clear was applied with badges just taped off, rather than removed.
Since the badges are installed after the car has been completely painted, there might be colour difference from UV exposure, but not a change in depth like OP observed. My suggestion is let a professional handle fixing this. |

Knowing that fact also helps the pro detailer when it comes time to fixing this issue. |
