Definitely more body roll on the Pirelli Sottozero winters. I don't expect summer sharp handing from my winter tyres. Though, suspension to sport mode drives more like comfort on the 19's.

They are a safety and journey completion compromise. I'll be smug when we get poor weather... But, I'm kind of already looking forward to getting back to spring.

Not sure if it is as simple as that - I'm no legal expert but not sure if it is worth the risk. As has been stated, cars are absolutely allowed to have lower speed ratings on winters than summers and indeed lower than the car's top speed - e.g. my E91 was allowed to run on H rated winters (130mph) despite the car's top whack being (I think) 144, and similarly, 328i, 335i, 330d and 335d are all limited to 155, yet can run on V rated (149mph). Suspect this is to do with the lack of availability of any winter tyres above that rating.

In many cases, the cost saving between H and V rated (Run Flat - if that is what you prefer) tyres of a given size/load rating is negligible anyway, so subject to availability, then surely no harm in getting the v-rated?

It can't be as simple as 'the car was doing less than the tyre's rating therefore insurance is no problem' otherwise most of us would get away with H or even T rated unless we were hammering down an autobahn. As many have said, it is largely academic given that most won't go that fast.

Tengocity, presumably you will stick to 149mph on your Germany trip in December?!

I blame a different higher profile rather than winter tyre itself. On my previous e92 had those Pirelli's exactly the same size as summer tyres and I didn't feel much difference in terms of steering as I can feel right now. I agree that sport mode on these is somewhat like comfort mode on 19" summer.

My tyres are V rated so I'm going to put speed limit warning at 145mph before my trip to Switzerland . And now I don't care- it could be snow on the road up to yhe front bumper - equiped with winter tyres and xDrive I can go everywhere . Plus think about snow chains too

I just bought a set, £1100, a lot to spend but I have memories a few years ago of me in a Lexus GS being stuck in snow, horrid experience.

I fitted Pirelli Sottozero and a tremendous transformation, better traction than a 4x4, (without winters).

I have children now and I find it's such a safety consideration I can't ignore it.

I looked at OE BMW wheels, expensive, but the wheels that mrwinterwheels have are OE suppliers to some car manufacturers so should be good quality.

I bought these;
http://www.mrwinterwheels.co.uk/18-b...-tyres-xr.html

with Pirelli Sottozero runflat tyres.

Here is the original you tube video I made with my squeaky voiced wife, It's editing is appalling but shows the benefit.

No, I should have.

I was on my very light snowy drive, I reversed off and turned the wheel, the car didn't turn, I turned the wheel the other way, the car refused to follow the front wheels, I pressed the button to snow mode, nothing happened, I crawled up the drive and parked the car for two weeks.

The car battery died, I fitted a new battery and winter tyres. We drove into the Peak district and went to the Cat and Fiddle Inn for Sunday dinner, the second highest Inn in England, anyway lovely food and we left.

I had parked in a car park with 6" of snow. A car next to me, mum, dad and two kids, were struggling to drive out, slipping around and thrashing the engine. We got in our car, reversed with no issues and drove away. It started to snow and the road was closed but we were fine.

Anyway I hope the new alloys are ok. I have lovely 19" 403s on at the mo but they can be cleaned and bagged up for the winter.

I will take pics and post when they arrive!

I'm kind of hoping it snows this winter so i can see for myself how good winter tyres are. Last year was the first year i had them, and of course it was the first winter in years that it hasn't snowed!

So far I am pleased with my purchase from mrwinterwheels, but the weather is not playing winter yet. However I notice that the road temps are gradually lowering and are around 8.0 degrees today.

At one of previous camps I was based at I had to pop to work over the Christmas and New Year period to check on some stuf.

Was great when it had been snowing.

Car park size of a 1 half football pitch virgin snow, no cars, just flatness.

loads of slides and snow loops lol

Driving on runway at night in the snow was just awesome - turn the lights off and use the force

I can imagine that, what a feeling , missing it a bit. should go for my skiing holidays by car rather than fly but it would have been an extra 2 days of driving going to Italy, not saying about extra 2500 mls.

Insurers, generally, will indeed try to wriggle out of everything, whenever they can. The reason for this is that everyone (but them) is of course fraudulent, and has nothing to do with the view of some that they are simply underhand self-serving thieves who owe no duty to anyone but their shareholders. Heavens forbid. However, although it won't stop them trying, there is no legal basis I can see (and I'm a lawyer) upon which they coild refuse to pay out on a sub 131mph loss using H rated tyres. They would have to prove causative potency, and they could not do so. It likely won't stop some 17 year old with a headset trying it on, but good luck.
Remember, insurers do not (as they would have you believe) have the last say on everything. Not suggesting you run the gauntlet, but if they're awkward when you advise them of your H tyres, escalate this until you find someone with a brain.

Thanks for that advice. I am not risking it and have ordered some Nokian V rated Winters. The H rated will be refused when they turn up.
