Any way to turn it off permanently?

No, you have to press the button each time you get in the car to disable start/stop for that journey.

And to the guy looking for a comparison with the CR-Z's start/stop, I've never driven the CR-Z but the system in the F30 is definitely noticeable.

Thanks.
You make your wide drive a van whilst you drive a BMW? Nice.

She is much happier with a van. Its a win-win. She hates driving my car because it intimidates her

BMW has released software to fix any of the early 335i F30 that had a problem where the engine sometimes stalled after the Auto Stop/Start system tried to restart. Problem was a calibration error. BMW cites an unfavorable DME software application as the source of the issue. It affects cars produced from 11/2/2011 to 2/29/2012.

USA members, refer your dealer to "SIB 12 06 12" (Service bulletin 10 12 00 09 00)

Cars built from March 2012 on should not have these problems.

Headrest Fix:
EDIT: Sorry, there was a typo on the list, this is another fix, not the one for headrests not going low enough
never liked that idea of the car shutting off when you come to a stop.

So far I haven't encountered this problem, so will they still apply the fix the next time I bring the car in for service? I assume that the conditions that prompted the fix mean that it's a potential issue for any 335i that was built during this period.

The dealer typically will apply all software updates when you bring it in for service.

You cant compare with a hybrid!!! Hybrid moves off on a electric motor and engine starts up later on. of course it will be less noticeable you are already in motion.

Normally BMW will not update software unless you are having the problem described in the patch. You can't just go in and get the latest update without some sort of problem that would be fixed by the update.

That's more or less what I suspected.

Show her the "off" button and have her press it every time she gets in and starts the engine. No stall.

Auto start/stop/stall. Great idea!

Get used to it, more and more manufacturers are adding it with every new model.
Soon all will have it.

Picked up my 2012 335i sport line 1 week ago. At first I didn't like the auto on/off feature, but have since been getting pretty used to it. I had read about the service bulletin, and my car was manufactured in February, but since I picked up my car on 4/30, I was expecting it to have already been dealt with.
I had the issue happen to me yesterday, and it was a little sketchy. Exactly as described, the motor fired up when I was ready to move at a stop light, but then immediately shut back off, and displayed a message about the auto on/off feature being disabled. It took me a few seconds to realize what had happened, then I fumbled to put the car back in park, apply brakes, fire up motor, then go back to drive. I have an appointment tomorrow morning for service.
Be warned, even if you pick up your car now, the dealer may not have applied the patch! Make sure they do it before you roll out of there.

Happened to me for the first time Saturday. Very disconcerting. I have a email in to my SA to get the updated software.

I have 1,400 miles and and it is a little surprising it took this long for it to happen. The car had been sitting all day and it happened after driving about 100 feet to a traffic light. Ambient temp about 70F.

the car goes into neutral when this happens and you can start it there. you just need to put it in drive afterwards.

Sent my car in to the service centre and had a software upgrade done to fix the auto stall problem

But I now noticed a different issue with the car, the "cruise control marker", the one that had a red or green light (small dot) at the speedo location of your set-speed... it is now lighting up at a slightly lower speed location, i.e. if I set it to go at 90km/h, the green dot is lighting up at the spot that should be 87-88km/h... I know for a fact that before software upgrade the light is always at the right spot
