F31 Rear End Erratic

I've got a 2012 F31 Touring RWD, with stock shocks and lowered Eibach pro kit (was lowered about 3 years ago) and with relatively new tyres on the rear (Goodyear Asymmetric 2s).

Recently, over the last month or so, I've noticed that at high speeds on the motorway going over bumps that the back end kicks out. This can be in any driving mode, and is really unnerving.

I regularly check the tyre pressure and ensure the bolts are tightened properly. The shocks or springs haven't caused any issues in the past. The only two possible things I can think of are 1) the goodyears are not great tyres (I've previously stuck to MP4S) or 2) the auxiliary shock absorber (the rubber thing on the shock) has disintegrated, but this has been like that for a while.

Anyone come across this before?

Most lowering springs require upgraded shocks/struts too. I'm guessing you have probably blown your stock shocks.

Is the car still on BMW OEM dampers ? They are renowned as being woeful and probably can’t handle the demands of stiffer and shorter springs.

At that age/mileage it would be good to check for blown struts, bump stops, and sway bar bushings/end links. Are these all original parts?

I am indeed on stock shocks, they've done 86k miles and never been changed as far as I know (and I've had the car 4 years now).

Other than the springs, everything else is original.

Sounds like I need to get new shocks etc, good time to get some coilovers methinks.

Haven't got around to fixing, but you guys were quite right. I had a look underneath and the rear passenger (left side) shock is leaking.

I've got to get her in to get them replaced, but will most likely opt for coilovers instead of the stock BMW option.

No consideration for the Birds offerings or the Eibach B12 Pro-kit set up etc?

I've just had the geo tweaked on my F31 this morning; front toe'ing in a lot; rear toeing in on the rear drivers side too much; all as it should be now and it drives so much better

A blown shock won't be doing you any favours though

I'll have to give them a call, but according to their site, they don't offer anything for the 328i other than coding out EDC

+1 on blown shocks.

I've heard KW and Koni Sport tend to have longer life than other makes but honestly, dampers do die over time. If you've got 86,000 miles, I'd say at least one damper, likely the front driver side, is dead and another is half dead. On short sport springs, definitely you've killed at least one or more dampers.

As for tyres, as annoying as it is to admit it, Michelin does make very good tires. Goodyear . . . more like Good-God, as in Good God man, what the hell are you doing?!

I've always loved Michelin street tires like the PS4S, PSAS4, or CC2. I think Continental comes in a close 2nd for street tires.

However, I really do like the GY Super Car 3 (220TW) tires for the track as a lapping tire that can handle a lot of heat with decent endurance.

No idea which Goodyears you get across The Pond; but the Assym6s are very well thought of over here and are very well reviewed. They reviewed/tested just as good as the latest PS5s and bettered them in some aspects

I chose them on the back of those reviews and glad I did; they've been absolutely superb on my F31

Tyres; like oil & brakes etc, are a very personal choice though

Some will love one brand over another etc
