Got my hands on a new toy today. I bought some pocket wizzards a little while back, but haven't had anything to use them on until today.... I picked up an ex580 flash.... many that's a nice unit... Build quality blows the ex430 away along with all the features and such....

sadly though, if i stick the pocket wizzard on my 5DII and the other one on the ex580, the master and slave units don't work well together when trying to trigger the ex430... I had my fingers crossed, but it ends up being delayed about 1 second.

now on the other hand, with the 580 on camera, the master and slave drives work seamlessly and i could hope for better.

This will work nicely with the infrared unit built into the 7D and a couple of tripods holding both flashes. (also 60D for anyone paying attention to this stuff and interested in flashes)

Main reason for my grabbing the pocket wizzards a while back was in prep for grabbing a big strobe, but i have a lot more research to do before i get to that. (also need to make some money to make such a purchase reasonable...)

Anyways, long story short... I wish i had put out the extra few dollars back in the summer when i bought the ex430 and just grabbed the ex580 instead, they are worlds apart, and i wish i knew that before now.

Happy shopping everyone...

and i think i still owe a review on the 135 F2L.... maybe i'll start a new thread for product reviews.

I'm really glad i got the 430EX when i got it, but looking back, i can see it's limitations now. If i were to buy another 430 for any reason, it would only be as a slave flash and nothing more.

It is a good flash, but the capabilities of the when compared, just pale in comparison.

I am writing a better review at the moment, it will be up in a few minutes. I'm starting a "reviews" thread.

Time to be a HERO......

Just picked up a GoPro last Friday. Haven't had much chance to play with it yet, but I think it will be a fun little camera for "action" type stuff. I plan to try it out on my truck, X5, motorcycle and firearms. I did a few tests on the motorcycle today, and learned that a paltry 2GB SD card only holds about 17 minutes of 1080p vid. Had to pick up a 32GB SDHC (max supported size) to get the recording capacity up....

So, I'm thinking about editing my Nashville photos using LR3 instead of Aperture. I figured most people use LR3 for a good reason in their workflow. I didn't realize how different the UI was compared to Aperture, and I'm struggling to find controls that I'm used to.

I can't speak/compare with Aperture but i use LR3 and the Develop tab is what i mostly use for editing

Well, I figured that much out

I think it's just the layout that's bothering me right now... it's probably more powerful than Aperture once you get the hang of it.

tryed lightroom a few times, just doesn't do it for me (not yet anyhow, need more practice with it.)

however i just find DxO is just a little easier to use, and it's layout isn't too different from Lightroom.

I will keep trying to see if i ever get the hang of Lightroom, but if i can't, i won't be disappointing because I'm happy with results i'm currently getting with what I've been using.

Let us know how you end up liking it, when you finally get used to it!

Problem?! Not a problem.

Those lenses are killer. Photogs from this past weekend's wedding used them all day, including the 21mm. Never seen a wedding photog manual focus all day. Guy was really good, too.

The student discounts are the best for Adobe.
LR3 is 100 and CS5 really cheap too. I'm not a student but my kids are and according to the Adobe cust service they are not different than what you buy on the shelf.

Yeah, I'm finally getting a little used to it. I think it took me forever to fifgure out how to straighten or crop an image. Anyways, I think it has a learning curve to it, but it's not too bad if you play around with it first. It's quite powerful.

For those of you interested in learning about strobes, here are some good tutorials. Although they were specifically for the Canon Speedlights, the same principles would apply to Nikon, etc strobes. Hope you find it useful!

1. Controls & modes
2. On and off-camera flash
3. Modifying flashlight
4. Advanced strategies

How is that site for renting lenses, Chewy?

Can anyone recommend other good sites for renting lenses? I'm sick and tired of borrowlenses.com. Their website ordering system sucks and keeps saying my transactions were rejected when my CC company keeps telling me they've approved them. Time to find a site with fewer hassles.

Honestly, I haven't heard many bad things about either site. Your review was the first harsh review I've heard about borrowlenses.com. But, I also don't have any personal experiences with either site. I think their prices are comparable. You can always look to rent equipment from your local higher-end photography stores too.
