I will be doing my oil change later. Last minute question, is this exactly 6.5 litres or a bit less due to oil left in the engine? The filling quantity as per the BMW technical guide is 6.5 litres.

Out of curiosity, did you do a cold or warm/hot oil change?

Question-

If I open the oil filter compartment without draining the oil first, will that compartment be filled with oil or relatively dry?

Asking cause I want to inspect the filter without changing the oil.

TIA

Probably a little wet with oil if the car was just sitting for a while but nothing much. Safe to do

I want to make sure I take out the correct drain plug. I don't have any cover under my 340i. Is the arrow pointing to the correct one? It seems pretty far back but I don't really see any other ones more forward of it. There's a larger opening forward of it but I didn't see any drain plugs in there.

The front of the car is to the left in both pics.

The oil plug is in the very back of the engine. If you look up through the hole you should be able to see the oil level sensor (black piece of plastic) near the plug, that's how you'll know you've got the right one.

Below is a picture of the B58 engine from a supra, you can see the drip pan and the black piece in the guy's hand is the oil level sensor, and just to the left of it is the drain plug. Both are towards the back of the car (the front of the engine is angled up towards the guy's face.

You can watch the full video of the engine on youtube and you'll get a better idea of where everything is on the engine. Jump to 5:35 and you'll see the oil pan.

Do you mean the oil drain plug? Google 'BMW 340i xDrive oil drain plug'. You'll get at least 30 hits.

Got a 2016 BMW 340i xDrive tuned on Stage 2 OTS maps with Bootmod3. Whats the best if not required oil for this tune?

I much appreciate this thread, especially the first post. I recently purchased a 2018 330i to replace one of the two 330ci models that I have owned from new (2002 coupe and 2006 convertible). Needless to say, I have been out of the loop for years, with respect to the new models as they have come along.

For almost sixty year, I have always done most of my basic service work and on occasion some of the more serious repairs, and to facilitate this, I have always purchased the available Factory Shop Manuals. Currently, I am astonished to find that such a manual does not exist for my latest purchase! I have stumbled up Technical Training Materials for the f30 series and for the B46 engine in my car, but finding these has certainly been a chore.

I wonder how the local independent shops get the necessary information to service these cars. Clearly, BMW and the other manufacturers are working diligently to make sure people bring their cars in to the dealerships for all service. I am most entertained by what I read in the Owner's Manual with respect to oil recommendations. No longer does BMW show under the hood "BMW Recommends Castrol". In fact, if you go to the Castrol website and look for an oil recommendation for the car, the oil company does not have one! BMW, for its part, recommends only its own part number that I assume is refined from the Queen's cream!

What a change we have seen in just a few years. Thank you all in advance for answers to the questions I may have in coming months.
Best,
Mike Smith

BMW no longer recommends Castrol because BMW goes through oil suppliers like Mickey Rooney went through wives. I use Liquimoly Molygen 5w-30.
You can get all the technical info from BMW you want, for $30 a day or $2500 a year. The good news is that anything you need to know you can find on line, usually in youtube videos.

BMW recommends warm oil so any debris is suspended and flows out the drain hole, I just try to be quick with the drain plug

Amsoil signature blend is what I have run in my b58 since 2017...it has DS2, port, daw, ultra about 4 clutches and at least 5 sets of tires but runs better then when I stole it from bmw in December of 2017. I run exutem because when I went to the reflex for managing fuel system (upgraded lpfp, hpdf & port) ecutek was the only platform with known reliable integration per a couple OG tuner that still daily there b58. I run 0x20 signature because I am in the Midwest and drive sometimes when it cold. Ran 5*40 signature when it was ran in the south.

The NGR best Oil Catch Can uses a stainless steel 40 micron internally baffled system to not only clean but to separate oil from the PCV. Features a 4 port design for both racing and street use. This 4 port design supports 8AN-10AN fittings it allows to relieve more crankcase pressure, if needed for racing/drag use or you can cap off and only use the necessary ports for a street application.
