Question Why are my doors not beeping sometimes?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
You know how the car beeps when you unlock the doors with the fob? Well, sometimes it just doesn't beep. I'm positive that the doors are locked. And I unlock them with the fob. But I did notice that sometimes the doors would unlock (you can hear the locks), without beeping.

Anyone else has noticed that?

If you lock your doors with the BMW Remote App then the alarm is not set and the car won't beep when you unlock it.

You probably don't have the setting enabled in the menus.

Maybe, but disabled by default.

Irritating as hell and has not been beeping in Europe for maybe the last 20 years. The turn signal flashes and thats good enough :-)

You're correct, they don't. Thank god.

Couldn't think of anything worse than a car beeping at you as you lock/unlock it. And that's just my own - I'd go insane hearing everyone elses!!

And why do US cars always beep/gong/chime at you when you put the key in/ignition on/engine start? I KNOW THE BLOODY ENGINE IS RUNNING, I JUST BLOODY STARTED IT!!

Really? You would go insane? Maybe you're already most of the way there if a little beep is going to set you off.

The reason for the "beep" is to provide an audible confirmation that the car has received the input to lock/unlock the vehicle. Just as the turn signal flash provides a visual confirmation of the same. The "beep" also aids in location tracking/obstructed view situations, it is nice to have both. Just ask my wife who constantly forgets exactly where she parked the car when she goes to the shopping mall!! Audible "Beep" aids in location determination in the daylight when the visible turn signal flash might not be as obvious or might be obstructed by other vehicles.

Afraid they would. I think I can speak on behalf of most the UK when I say that. I don't want to be woken up by some tw@ going to work earlier than I am in the morning. Because of that beep, my friendly neighbours immediately become tw@s.

I get what you mean about finding your car in a car park, but again, here in the UK we don't seem to have this problem.

I also take the view that if you can lock/unlock your car with the key, you're already close enough to it
If you're far away, that's where the BMW Remote App is handy to flash the lights or in the US, have a quick one-off toot of the horn.

Moreover, I (maybe we) don't feel we need both visual, audible and tangible feedback for when locking the car.
Just press the button, glance at the car flashing (may I also add that the sound of the locks going down is quite loud) and simply note it has locked.
Better still, if you have the electric folding mirrors, keep the lock button depressed for them to fold in.

In europe at least our women can remember where they parked the car

American here, I think I can field this question.

It's because we're stupid.

I sincerely hope that answers your question.

Ha, that may be.

Is it a regulation though you have over there?
