I've got vintage vitreous enamel plates that are going on the 328.. was looking at how they would be mounted today at the dealership.. looks like the rear will need a custom bracket made to extend the pre-existing holes out to the plate mounting holes.. (they can't be drilled) and the front will need spacers put on as there is a slight curve in the bumper.. needs a 20mm spacer each side and the middle of the plate will sit flush with the bumper... plates cannot be bend either.. slightly stressed..

"Bright Lights" plates from NSW - the blue is the same intensity as the BMW emblem - the rear plates at night really stand out with the LED lighting.

I've ordered my custom plates, and they are now sitting at the RMS waiting for my vehicle to arrive. I was so tempted to go with BMW F30 which I discovered was available but because it doesn't conform to one of the "standard" plate designs, I was going to have to cop $440 per year. In the end I settled on going with the number number-first plates and got 320 BMW which fits one of the new designs and only costs $99 per year.

It is annoying though because last time I got custom plates (for my early mid-life crisis car - a 300ZX) you didn't have to pay a yearly fee if you had one of the standard letter/number combinations, only an ordering fee. Now it seems that if you want any control over what is on your plates in NSW, they are going to charge you for it continuously.

My wife asked me why custom plates were so important to me - since she doesn't particularly like spending money on things she considers luxuries (don't ask what I had to go through to get the okay to buy the F30).

I told her that I have had custom plates on every single car I have owned except my first. Nothing ostentatious, usually just something that refers to the make and model of the car - something easy to remember. In my line of work I find myself signing in on contractor sheets at a variety of sites and most want your rego plate so that they know who to contact if they need your vehicle moved. Having something easy to remember streamlines the process for me.

It's function over vanity in my case, but I don't begrudge anyone the choice to make their proverbial mark.

WA is a one off charge also, no annual amounts thank god. It is definitely a personal choice, however I went for white on black slim line front and full sized rear and I think it looks hot (Alpine white) check out my photos for some ideas J1n

Yeah, I dunno... some of the plates out there are truely cringeworthy. Yesterday I saw a black E82 with "Y U LOOK". The irony being the owner modified the crap out of it to get people's attention.

Yeah, southside. Debadged, so not sure if it was a 135i. Had black wheels and a really dark tint on the taillights. Liked the wheels, matte black csl mesh style. The taillights and plate ruined it. It screams look at me, so the plate makes me laugh. Personal opinion only though, to each their own
